About Geneva

As a teacher who has led writing and argumentation courses for over a decade at the college level, and as a scholar of rhetoric and composition, I teach with a specific understanding of the education system.

Students should be given the tools for success in the long term, rather than just for one assignment, and so I endeavor to teach forward-looking skills with each student.

I specialize in writing instruction in general, but can best help student on how to approach SAT and ACT writing as a genre, as well as college entrance essays, research papers, persuasive essays, and literary analysis. I can teach strategies for improving scores on the SAT reading and writing sections, with a focus on grammar as the SAT graders prefer it. I will often assign homework to reinforce skills learned during the lesson and model good study behaviors.

What I enjoy most about tutoring is the ability to introduce students to writing and literature outside of the confines of the classroom. One-on-one consultations allow for a deeper exploration of the student's strengths and weakneses, as well as a richer understanding of materials.

I began teaching as a part of my program at the English department of the University of Oklahoma. I stayed with it after realizing how much I enjoy working with writers. I love writing myself, but I understand how thorny it can be to grapple with new content at the same time you are grappling with perfecting the form of how to portray that content.

At the University of Oklahoma, I taught freshman composition and worked in the writing center as a consultant and Program Assistant. At the University of Houston, I taught freshman writing and argumentation, in addition to Intro to Literature and Intro to Drama. Further, I have eight years of experience tutoring students from 5 to 22 years old at C2 Education. There, I have tutored students on standardized tests, schoolwork in English and History, and essay writing.

About the lesson

Our first session will involve a discussion of how you are doing in the subject and your general studying habits. We wil progress from there to working on your assignment, which I will analyze from my experience as a teacher and help you to complete to the best of your skills.

The youngest students I have worked with were around 5-6, and we worked on phonics and reading skills. The majority of my students have been middle or high schoolers, working on standardized testing and school work. My specialty is composition of essays and fiction, which I have done with writers from ages 12 and up. My experience at the University of Oklahoma meant that I had the opportunity to consult on papers from freshman to faculty.

1) The teacher should try to give criticism constructively, but approach the session with the understanding that we want to focus on improving weaknesses while keeping your strengths. 2) Come with materials and questions ready to maximize your time. 3) Don't be afraid to ask for additional clarification and examples. English teachers have read widely and should be able to come up with something to help explain.
