About Bethany
My tutoring abilities stand out because of my vast experience working with a wide array of age ranges, my own extensive work in the literature and English field, and because of my empathetic nature. Throughout my undergraduate and post-graduate work, I have worked with elementary, middle, and high school students. For the past five years, I have also instructed at the college level while I completed my own Ph.D. I have volunteered in many other roles with children of all ages too and I have helped care for my five nieces and nephews since birth. I am also a new and very proud mom of a little girl. I am easily able to relate to kids of all ages and my work in the college setting has helped me to extend my capabilities to adults too.
As mentioned above, I am working on a Ph.D. in literature at Duquesne University. I am finishing my dissertation in children's literature and Victorian literature and I have already completed over ten years of post-secondary work in the field. I have presented at numerous conferences and I've received top grades in all of my courses. I have focused mostly on literature, but I am trained in education too and hold a secondary education certificate in the state of PA. I also stay up to date on the latest instruction methods and professional development in the literature and education fields. Further, my extensive training in English and education, supplemented by my undergraduate training in biology and psychology, allow me to read comprehensively in a variety of fields.
Finally, my primary scholarly focus is children's literature and childhood studies within the larger scope of Victorian literature. This focus gives me a well-rounded preparation for working with kids of all ages and for educating all ages. Most importantly though, I am a naturally empathetic person and I work hard to understand others' perspectives. This ability, and my personal belief that children deserve to be listened to and should be appreciated, make me an ally and champion for individuals needing help at any age. As my client, I will respect you, truly listen to you, and do all I can to understand your perspective--skills that are absolutely necessary to achieve the most in a tutoring atmosphere. My service stands out most of all because I will do all I can to help a client achieve his or her goals, no matter your age or background. I am here to help you succeed.
I most enjoy the way a person's face lights up when he or she understands or discovers something new. As an educator, you get to personally witness as a mind grows and it's truly magical. Educators get the rare opportunity to really get to know a person and how his or her mind works and then, no matter how vast that person's education already is, there is always room to see that person's mind extend even further. It's amazing to get to see people grow and extend their capabilities into brand new places.
I have a B.A. in English, a certification in secondary education, and minors in biology and psychology from Saint Vincent College. I have an M.A. in Literary and Cultural Studies from the University of Pittsburgh, and I am in the dissertation phase of a Ph.D. in English from Duquesne University. I passed the Praxis exam with the highest rating, I've been trained specifically in tutoring for the SAT, and I've completed professional development at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels in both English and education.

I get to know the student's learning style first so that I can adjust my methods and lessons accordingly. For example, if a student is more of an auditory learner, I'll focus my material on auditory teaching methods. I then establish what the student's goals are, what my goals for the student are, and what smaller steps we can take to get there. I also center everything around the student and giving the student ownership over his or her work. The student should be building confidence so that he or she can take skills learned with me and apply them independently.
