I'm Benjamin, "The Paper Genie," here to make your writing wishes come true. As a Writing Consultant for the University of Colorado and retired English teacher, helping people to write better is my passion.

As a natural-born teacher, I believe that my most important skill is active listening. I take the time to gain a comprehensive understanding of clients' needs. There are few greater feelings than those which derive from helping students to achieve their goals.

I love to work with middle and high school students, though most of my freelance experience has been in helping college grad school students. Via platforms like Upwork and thepapergenie.com, I've optimized essays for Harvard Law and Business schools, Yale Law, Stanford Medical, Oxford, Cambridge, the London Schools of Economics and Business, Johns Hopkins Medical, Northwestern Law, Columbia Architecture, and many more.

Specifically, I provide comprehensive feedback and revision of ideas, organizational structure, style and fluency, voice, tone and word choice, genre-specific strategies, and, of course, meticulous proofreading.

I have a Master's degree in Secondary English Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Colorado, as well as an English degree from the University of Iowa.

Helping others to write better has been my life's mission. For 26 years I taught English, during which time I edited thousands of essays, personal narratives, opinion pieces, and other types of academic writing. In 2017, I was honored as my school's Exemplary Performance Award recipient, for my ability to help students reach their respective potentials as writers and thinkers.

I love to be there in the "aha" moments, those flashes of insight that students get when they grasp a new and/or difficult concept or skill. I've always been a born helper- that's what I enjoy most; it gives me a great sense of gratitude and accomplishment.

It may sound cheesy, but I felt "the calling." I began teaching seventh grade English in Commerce City, at Adams City Middle School. I then went on to teach for 23 years in Jefferson County, at Carmody Middle School.

I have a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Secondary English Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Colorado-Denver, as well as an English degree from the University of Iowa.

I am also trained as a College Writing Consultant (I currently work in the University of Colorado-Denver Writing Center).

About the lesson

With a new student, it's important to build trust, to establish a positive, nonjudgmental tone. Getting to know students helps me to discover how they learn best and also gives me an idea of things they may be interested in, so that when we're faced with a challenging assignment, we may be able to relate it to a personal interest.

I have worked with all types of students, from sixth grade to college grad students. I've taught advanced 8th-grade language arts, and I've also worked with a good number of "at-risk" students. I have worked with over 160 English language learners and over 200 students with unique needs. Of course, in a broad sense, all students have unique needs.

I would say to pay attention to how they present themselves in writing. I'd also look for SUCCESSFUL experience. Beyond that, I think it's important to seek a person who's personality is a good fit, to create a good work dynamic.

At the U. of Colorado Writing Center, I worked with a very "type A" undergrad student who was writing a long, complex literature review. She became overwhelmed and began to cry. I "talked her down," pointing out the good things she had already done in her writing. Then, we put together a plan for her to finish her lit review. I later saw her walking outside, and she came over to give me a very enthusiastic high-five, telling me that she had gotten an "A-97%" on her paper.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It may be a good idea to ask themselves what their teachers are looking for (Is there a rubric and/or assignment guidelines I can share with my tutor?) I think they should consider exactly what types of skills they need help with, as well as the depth of assistance they require. Also, it's always good to have a time frame in mind going in.
