About Caroline

I am a musician and writer, avid reader and dog lover. My goal is to make learning fun and fulfilling. School work doesn't have to be tedious and boring! I love watching students grow and develop passion for subjects they previously found to be difficult and uninspiring. I went to Brown Univesity and spent 1 year living in Berlin. I am a piano player, singer and songwriter, creative writer and tehno DJ. I have previously taught English online and piano lessons online and in person. This will not be your typical tutoring session - get ready to have some fun :)

It is incredibly rewarding for me to watch my students grow and develop their own voice and vision. My role is to serve as a catalyst for this progress, and also maintain patience. I understand that progress is not linear, and that it takes a while to get tangible results. This can be really frustrating! My role is also to make learning fun and energizing. Just because something is a challenge doesn't mean it has to be dreadful. :)

I began teaching piano when I was 14 years old, and I began tutoring when I was in college. It gave me an outlet for my passion to help people, and grounded me when I swung too much into my "artist" mind. I soon found that I had a passion for helping people work hard and develop newfound interest in areas that were previously challengnig or even tedious.

I went to The Spence School in NYC, and then Brown University. I received a 2230 on my SAT, with an 800 in Writing, ranking in the top percentile of my graduating class. I was honored as a National Merit Scholar and ranked Cum Laude on the National Latin Exam. I have previously taught English, essay editing, and music education including classical piano lessons for beginners and Logic Pro production. In 2015 I founded a print magazine called DRØME, and worked intimately with artists including Billie Eilish, Sofi Tukker and Amandla Stenberg. I personally interviewed these artists and wrote articles about them. This work was published and sold in dozens of bookstores across the country. I have written a full feature script that is currenty being shopped to production companies, and am in the middle of my first fantasy novel.

About the lesson

I like to get to know the student - what excites them, what bores them, what scares them. A personal connection is key to becoming inspired and allowing a safe space where the student can explore new terrain. After a connection is formed, I like to create a plan. I am not strict about plans, but I do believe that some structure both helps keep the work on track and allows the student to feel accomplished upon completion of goals. I am FAR more interested in helping a student open up their mind to think for themselves than I am in helping them conform to the status quo. While grammar is important in creative writing and English, it is far more important to me to allow students to develop big, interesting ideas, than know exactly where to put a comma.

I have worked with a range of ages and personalities. I have worked with students from 5 years old to 22 Ivy League college graduates. My most recent student is a young woman from University of Pennsylvania. I enjoy connecting with a vast array of students, and am open to anybody who is open to me.

Try and find the right fit. The "right fit" is not necessarily someone with the most experience or qualifications; yit is important to find someone who is capable of really taking the time to understand you, your dreams, goals and fears. Find someone who you look forward to calling, whether that is virtual or in person. In my experience, a teacher in any area can drastically affect the outcome of a student's inspiration and interest in a subject. It is super important to find someone you find to be fun and inspiring, along with being helpful.

In the past year, I have adopted two dogs. One from a shelter and the other I found at a gas station when she was 2 months old, dirty and starving! I have spent much of my time dog training over the past year, and similar to teaching, it is extremely rewarding both for me and my pups to see the progress. Training has taught me so much about patience, and the art of sticking with something even if the progress isn't tangible or evident yet. There comes a time when you look at the work you've done and say, "Wow! I did that." This is what I want for my students.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I like my students to be as honest as possible. This starts to really happen when the student gets comfortable with me and sees that I am not a typical teacher. When I was in high school, I hated homework. I loved reading and writing and discussing interesting subjects with my teachers, but I didn't understand the purpose of all this busy work. It caused me to get below average grades in several classes in 9th and 10th grade. I redeemed myself through hard work, discipline and my desire to get to a college where I could fully express myself, resulting in matriculation to Brown University.
