About Carolyn

I believe that effective communication is crucial in academic study as well as in so many occupations, and that writing in clear, uncluttered prose is not only a requirement, but a key to better grades, and to advancement in the workplace.

Essay writing is not mysterious: it is a formula that anyone can learn without tears. Outlining is key and there are basic rules for sentence and paragraph construction that can also be easily mastered with a checklist that lets students know that their work is on point.

I have written several books and a number of articles, and I love writing and enjoy helping both students and adults get targeted instruction and discover the benefits of honing their writing skills.

Even though I was not teaching English, in all of my courses I gave a writing sample to see which students needed work on essay construction, sentence construction and syntax. After identifying such deficiencies, I sent them to the Writing Center to get help with specific weaknesses (often all) addressed. I then monitored their work for improvement, or the need for further work. Many students were pleased at having their weaknesses addressed and receiving targeted instruction. I look forward to helping individuals or small groups of students discover that reading good writing improves one’s own ability, and that writing well-constructed essays is not a mystery, but a skill that can be learned without tears and something to be proud of.

I have a passion for teaching, and this was confirmed in 2017 with the Trailblazer Award for “passion, leadership, support, and advocacy” by the LGBTQA Social Justice Center of Pace University.

I have a Masters in English and wrote what my professors judge as an excellent thesis on the classic undergraduate novella “Bartleby the Scrivener” by Herman Melville.

I created a course and sent it to a collage who hired me.

As already noted I have substantial published writing experience on my own and have taught countless undergraduate classes all of which required essay writing over 20 years.

About the lesson

Depending on the student I ask what type of instruction they have had and if it has not been particularly effective, why not?

I then ask what they would like to get from tutoring support.

I assign a two page writing sample of five or six paragraphs on a subject of their choice.

After critiquing the writing sample I explain that essay writing has a formula that anyone can learn and that following what they will learn from me they will be able to write in a way that is not like wandering in a forest with a blindfold but like one with a map that begins at clear point and ends however many paragraphs later by one intended to go.
