About Sofia

I'm a Columbia student with a deep-seated passion for literature & creative writing. I won several national awards for creative writing through high school and also have extensive experience in journalism, including serving as the current news editor of my college's newspaper. I'm ready to help with anything writing & literature-related, whether it's strengthening your paper or encouraging your creative side.

I've always loved tutoring and helping students be their best. In high school, I helped conduct leadership workshops for primary school students and worked at my local Kumon service as a grader and tutor. On a more informal level, I've loved guiding my two younger sisters into writing strong college essays, homework assignments, and more. I love working with students both young and old!

I am a Creative Writing and English double major at Columbia University with an additional journalism background. I've garnered national recognition for my writing through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards; have been published in several literary magazines; and currently work as the News Editor at Columbia University's student newspaper.

About the lesson

Depends on the student! If a student has a specific assignment they're working on, we can go hands-on with that assignment. Otherwise, if they're just looking to strengthen their writing skills, I'll usually gauge their skill set and areas of improvement through writing exercises or looking at old writing assignments. Then we can do practice exercises, which can include outlining and writing practice essays together; we can also do grammar exercises and review if that is needed. For English or literature-specific tutoring, we can review assignments as needed and do exercises in which we practice the skills of literary analysis for a wide variety of literary texts and genres.

For creative writing, you can think of me as your personal "workshopper"--I'll read your writing and we can discuss your intent, your goals, your choices with craft, your use of language, and discuss what decisions you might make in revision. In addition, for first-time writers, I can also give personalized lessons on elements of craft for creative writing.
