About Kerrick

As professional educators with more than ten years of experience teaching in and out of the classroom, Scandent Learning teachers don't just teach a subject. We also help you learn how you learn successfully.

I come from a family of teachers. My father is a retired teacher who now mentors new teachers, my mother has long worked as a media specialist in schools, and my sister is now a science and gifted specialist in a public elementary school. My guiding question has always been, "How can people become successful self-educators?" I've pursued that goal in museums and cultural institutions, in traditional classrooms, with online learning, and with one-on-one tutoring.

I have a Masters in Education and have taught in California and Illinois. I have designed curriculum and educational programming for the Museum of the African Diaspora and for the Exploratorium in San Francisco, and I have taught in the classroom at all levels K-12. I have tutored students to ace the MCAT with The Princeton Review, and I presently teach one-on-one and online.

About the lesson

I start by assessing who you are as a learner--what has worked for you in the past, what are your strengths, and what are your goals? This will help me identify strategies and tools that I can teach you to achieve your best work.

Students I have worked with have come from a variety of situations:

* Gifted and/or twice-exceptional

* ADD/ADHD

* Anxiety/depression

* LGBTQ+

* Autism-spectrum disorders

Every learner is unique, and everyone has strengths to draw on. I always approach the learning collaboration with respect for the learner.

Be honest with yourself and the teacher about your goals for yourself. First identify where you are as a learner--what are your strengths, what are your areas of challenge, and what has and hasn't worked well for you in the past?

Make sure the teacher you hire has experience customizing a learning program to meet the needs of individual learners.

This should go without saying, but every teacher should have a fundamental level of respect for the learner, since it's ultimately the learner who drives the process and does the work. That respect should require the teacher to push the learner in certain ways--we may see that you can do more than even you believe. At the same time, we treat you as a whole person, not a set of "behaviors" to be corrected.
