About Alicia

I love to empower my students with the study techniques they need to be successful on their own beyond the scope of the tutoring sessions. For every student I work with, I help them to create a flexible and individualized study plan to help them to reach their goals. Getting organized and establishing discipline in their studies is so crucial to thriving in an educational environment and a career later on, so it is one of my main focus points with every student. I believe that every student is capable of expanding their knowledge and doing well in school as long as they have the right tools and the will to succeed.

I have been a tutor for 7 years during which I taught a variety of subjects including elementary, middle, and high school Math, college level English, and high school and college level health and Biology. These three subjects can include some of the most challenging topics for students when the teacher isn’t able to engage the class or present the material in an accessible way. For this reason, I like to find fun examples and activities to make the material personally relevant to the student because it stimulates their curiosity and encourages them to explore the topic more on their own. There is nothing more rewarding than watching my student's eyes light up after a difficult topic finally clicks for them!

I'm a UCLA graduate with a Bachelor's in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. I am currently pursuing my Master's in Medical Physiology with the eventual goal of become a physician. Math was always my favorite subject in school because I viewed it as a puzzle to solve. It was logical and a mental challenge, even when I couldn't find a direct application for it right away. As I went through my undergraduate education, I finally got to see the practical application of algebra, calculus, and statistics as each of these subjects were used to simulate changes in animal populations due to certain environmental factors or model drug effects for safety and efficacy before clinical trials on humans. Math-based models like those have helped to save thousands of human and animals lives already. Because I have worked with applying math, science, and English to real life situations and have designed projects to simplify difficult concepts, I can more easily find new ways to present topics to make them relevant to the students I teach no matter whether they are an auditory, visual, or tactile learner.
