About Dondi

I've always been a writer. I've always loved English and reading whatever I could get my hands on. I'm a certified English teacher for high school (grades 8-12 actually) with plenty of experience also teaching dual credit/college composition and American Literature. I can even throw in a bit of IB Theory of Knowledge for anyone interested. I'm very used to working with students on their writing with feedback, but I honestly prefer working one on one with people so that I can give more information than large classes allow. I'd rather tailor my help to your abilities and levels than have to rush through just to make a deadline. I get that some students need more help than others and the help may not be the same for everyone. I also get that writing and comprehending what you've read can be really hard. I'll do what I can to help you.

I have a certification to teach grades 8-12 in Texas (English Language Arts and Reading). I have seven years' experience doing so in a public high school and a good five years teaching dual credit and/or freshman composition. I've taught American Literature for dual credit courses for almost that long, too. I've done training in IB Theory of Knowledge and taught one year of that, and I am trained in IB English courses as well.

I prefer getting to know a new student a little at the beginning. What are they comfortable with? What are they struggling with? Do they like anything when they're reading or writing? How much experience do they have doing those things? What do they want to do with their lives? Because writing and reading are part of communication, it helps me to figure out what makes the skills meaningful to learn for them if I know a little about them (but I don't want to get too invasive).

Be clear about what you need done and/or what you need help with. Answer truthfully if and when they ask you questions. It's not a bad thing to not understand something or need help doing so. If you have a learning disability (or learning difference), make sure to let them know what it is and what supports you usually need in school to help with those differences.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What exactly am I having problems with? What about this assignment/lesson/etc. is tripping me up? How have I tried to tackle the issue already? Did it work? Why or why not?

I tend to price my lessons between $24/hour and $35/hour depending on what lesson I'm asked to teach or support I'm asked to give. For example, if it's an hour long session brushing up on grammar and punctuation, that's a $24/hour lesson. If, however, I'm being asked to spend at least one to two hours with a deep dive into an essay looking at vocabulary, structure, grammar, punctuation, organization, and flow (developmental editing, basically), that will be $35/hour - and it may well need a return visit. Timing is also key: a student who waits until the last minute to ask for my help and expects miracles may not get them, but what I can give will cost $35/hour.

I'm not a monster, though. If someone needs my help and can't do $24/hour (because it's hard out there right now), I can negotiate something reasonable for them per hour. I need compensation but not at the expense of someone's next meal or bill coming due.
