About Bruno

As an English Language and Literature Tutor, I love nothing better than to teach the foundational lessons that have inspired myself and my students to love reading and writing.

As a Standardized Testing Tutor, I empathize with my students' general...lack of enthusiasm for these high-pressure scenarios. Having been a student myself, I've found that one valuable insight I could offer my students was to provide them with the "big picture."

In my classes I help students understand the purpose behind each subject and how to use this knowledge to form problem-solving strategies. These strategies can then be applied to any standardized test, as well as throughout one's educational and professional life.

I am dedicated to assisting students to be effective writers by teaching them how to use crisp language, organize their ideas, have a fluent word flow, and self-edit their work.

I am committed to helping students to improve their test scores by addressing their weakness, reinforcing strengths and teaching problem solving techniques.

Tutoring sessions are engaging and dynamic, with active participation by students.

I have been tutoring for several years and have generally used the first session to get to know the student and to ready them for active participation during our time together. I begin by asking my student for their thoughts about the subject of our study: related interests, what they find intuitive, and especially what they find frustrating about it. If I find the student to be particularly shy, I also spend a bit of time going over how mistakes are just a natural part of the learning process. “There's a reason,” I've often repeated, “that 'learn from your mistakes' is a cliché.”

            After discussing the student’s experiences with the subject, we then discuss what a correct answer or exemplary assignment will look like—as these may not be as obvious as one would think. Once they have visualized what their “goal” is, I introduce the student to a broad methodology that they can apply to every problem related to the subject. For example, in the case of Reading Comprehension, the first step would be to read the passage and mark key words or phrases. These precise steps go on to provide the framework for our future sessions, as they give the student the means with which to attempt any question related to the subject. 

            Rather than just lecture, I strive to let the student discover the utility of these steps through their own efforts. Not only does this keep the student active and engaged, but it allows me to observe and adjust subsequent lessons based on their performance. By using the first session to let the student express their opinions on the subject and to actively engage with a stable, overarching methodology, I find that they become more invested and motivated during our future sessions.
