About Shade

I strive to help your child realize their full potential, and that they are able to comprehend any skill once they put their mind to it.

I currently have 4 years of direct tutoring experience with children and adults, ranging from 5 to 55 years old.

For the 2019-2020 school year, I was a City Year Americorps member working in the Philadelphia region. I tutored & mentored students from grades 5-6 in English, Reading, and Writing, with most students being classified as ESL learners. I went through a rigorous and extensive training process for my Americorps role that helped refine my skills to be an inclusive, patient, and understanding tutor.

I have been working with kids in a caretaking setting since 2013 with my educational background being in psychology. I graduated from Delaware State University in 2019 with a B.S. in Psychology, but I have always had a passion for helping children improve their learning skills as well as socio-emotional skills.

I enjoy seeing the kids realize that they've grasped a concept. I love when I ask children if they need help and they turn me down because "it's easy work".

During an internship in my junior year of college, I helped a patient learn to read while she was waiting for her therapy sessions. This helped me realize my love for seeing people finally see when they grasped what was previously so hard for them. After graduation, I began working with City Year in Philadelphia working in the classroom while simultaneously working virtually providing tutoring to students in Jackson, MS, Los Angeles, CA, and Detroit, MI.

For the 2019-2020 school year, I worked in Philadelphia public schools as a City Year Americorps Member. I tutored 10+ children in group settings in English, Reading, Writing, Vocabulary, etc for a total of 1700 hours. Since 2020, I have provided online tutoring services through the Reconstruction US platform for students ages 5-13.

About the lesson

I love to take the first session to get to know the student and their learning style: what type of feeback works best for them, learning a bit of their personal background (likes/dislikes), and of course what areas they feel they are strong and weak in. I take all this into account to know how to mold my tutoring style to best fit the needs of the student for example whether they need more encouragement in the form of positive feedback or a "warm/strict" approach, meaning I will still be warm and polite but the child needs much more structure in how the lesson is held.

I have worked with a very diverse group of students this past year. All differ in backgrounds ethnically and where they are in learning the english language, where some are only in their first year of learning English whereas others have 5+ years. I've worked with both talkative and quiet students, as well as students who were classified from Kindergarten-5th grade reading & comprehension levels while working in a 5th grade classroom.
