About Sarah

SSG Tutoring has a primary focus on developing supportive academic skills and tools within students in order to solidify the fact that what a student needs to achieve is not only within them but accessible through the right attitude and supplements. Learning is a lifelong process and tutoring is a wonderful way to empower students with the autonomy to do what is best for them.

With a deep understanding of the neurological needs and growth opportunities of adolescents, SSG Tutoring focuses on problem solving skills, creativity in critical thinking, and encouragement of all students to push themselves. SSG Tutoring strongly believes in empowering students with the skills and mindset to see their academic struggles as challenges for which all necessary tools are within reach.

Sarah is a recent college graduate with a major in Psychology, an emphasis in Neurology, and a minor in Education Studies. She has worked with children for over 8 years ranging from infancy through college level students in over 10 different educational programs and schools. These experiences range from teaching Psychology in a college classroom, to ESL teaching and tutoring, to editing college senior theses to teaching yoga and mindfulness workshops in elementary schools -- variety is the spice of life!

It is so rewarding to see students master a new language and approach the challenge as something that, with time, they can master and use in their daily lives.

I have had tutors throughout all of my schooling and I am grateful for the space that this allowed me to learn about myself as a student and has shown me the importance in personal learning methods as it relates to standard education.

About the lesson

We begin with an overview of how the student is processing the target concept. From this analyzation it is clear to see whether the problem is content-based or perhaps a problem with mindset. Many students, at the point of being with a tutor, have elevated levels of stress and perhaps disappointment. If these feelings can be identified, it makes a clearer path to restoring confidence in the student and breaking down the content so as to rework and reapproach.

I have worked with a wide variety of students in various fields, some of which are listed below

-Yoga and Mindfulness Workshops - Elementary, 1-5 grade

-ESL - adults, HS Freshman

-College application prep - HS Seniors + Juniors

-Academic tutoring and teaching, various - 1 grade - College Sophomores

-College thesis writing tutoring in: Education, Psychology, English, Writing, Biology, Art History, Neurology

When looking for an English teacher, look for one who is able to do quick-reads and able to give big picture feedback first with syntax second. Writing is incredibly unique and no two papers will look the same but the best way to become a great writer is to find your voice and then apply the content in an appropriate form. Many academic writing prompts will be very specific so this form might be counterintuitive but if you can find your own message, themes, and tone before conveying it in your writing, you will have a clear path and a belief that what you are writing is important because you have come up with your own special response.

My latest teaching experience was with a group of remedial English high school students, many of whom were included in the group due to a lack of access to the English language (due to immigrant status). It was eye opening and allowed me to see that with a structured school, students may be in positions that do not truly align with their needs -- which is why tutors can be so incredible!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should remember that sometimes their minds are not the problem in terms of brute ability to understand and retain information, but rather their own approach -- mostly mindset. When a problem seems to be too big to tackle students will always have better results by breaking it down, taking a step back, and asking themselves truly what is stopping them. Perhaps it is a question on the homework or perhaps it is that students are feeling as though the whole lesson is going over their head! Any teacher will be willing to tackle both types of problems -- whether it be coming up with a system to review or slowing down and retracing steps. I myself have met with over 20 tutors in order to excel in academia!

Don't be afraid of talking to a teacher about your insecurities! They are paid to be able to help you problem-solve and better yourselves as students. :)
