About Shelly

Because my father supported me in writing, I became passionate about the four language arts (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Knowing that college graduates are often soft on the skill of communication, I delved into paving a path for young students to keep the structure and style of clear writing at the forefront. I love having the opportunity to help students go from being non-writers to becoming confident, competent communicators. This approach not only addresses the writing skills I lacked as a college graduate it also targets those skills students need in learning how to think instead of what to think (critical thinking). Through consistent, repeated opportunities to use those most valuable, and “uniquely human”, skills that machines can’t yet perform, that big divide between struggling communicators and confident communicators closes.

I have 30 + years of teaching experience, a BA in Early Childhood Education and a Master of Arts in Education.

While growing up I enjoyed playing school, baby-sitting and reading to children. Naturally I gravitated toward teaching. I've taught in public schools, private schools, home school, church school and private tutoring. I was a librarian for a few years and am currently a support person for a community literacy project. Kids and literacy are one of my greatest delights.

Although I've been a teacher for the past 35 years, several years ago I became a Registered Teacher for the Institute for Excellence in Writing. My training taught me how to incrementally teach students to write with clear structure and compelling style. I've been trained to begin with the basics, and as indicated on the website it involves rewriting a paragraph and in time we continue all the way into advanced creative and essay writing. My training clearly taught me the importance of nurturing excellence in writing. The impact that this approach to writing has on students is regardless of age they do grow in both writing and thinking skills.

About 10 years ago I would have answered this question with "Most of my teaching years have been dedicated to working with young children who were learning how to read." Not only is it impossible to separate the four language arts, (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) there is never a time where any student has completed their journey in becoming a competent communicator. Having said that, I've worked with children as young as two and adults as old as 50.

You are on a pathway to mastery. Your goal is to become a more competent communicator. More competent when you listen, speak, read and write. Learning a skill is more about process than it is about the end result. Look for experiences where you are able to practice all you’re learning. A teacher who models exactly what is expected and is available to give you sufficient assistance, paves a pathway for you to practice freely without the pressure of constant correction.

In January 2020, shortly before we became cloistered in our homes due to Covid19, I enjoyed being a part of a literacy event. I am passionate about the importance of reading-aloud to children. Jim Trelease, author of the best-seller, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" (eighth edition recently published) tells us, "Every time we read to a child, we're sending a 'pleasure' message to the child's brain." Although the academic benefits are clearly abundant, as is the development of a passion for reading, being read-aloud to is a gift of love. For the child who is often read to, "book" is translated as love. The simple act of reading aloud helps parents form deep connections with their children, an impact that will grow even stronger if it’s continued even after the children have learned how to read on their own.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out

Ask yourself: "Do I really understand this assignment?" "What part of this assignment do I not understand?" If you do not understand any definition, ask for clarification. For example: "What's an adverb?"

Be ready in advance to ask specifics so the teacher will understand what kind of help you need. If you have any questions or comments, request time for a meeting. During any meeting, always be prepared to take notes which will confirm your understanding or perhaps raise more questions. Keep in touch with your teacher concerning your questions/needs/growth. Communication is foundational with regard to the teacher/student relationship.
