About Tom
I'm a dedicated, enthusiastic, and personable Social Studies tutor with five years of experience of teaching and mentoring students. I'm passionate about engaging with learners and helping them build knowledge and transferable skills through innovative and empathetic teaching. I bring with me five years of experience teaching and mentoring students, as well as developing curricula, planning learning activities, and grading student work. I specialize in modern history and have taught and published in this field. However, I also have experience working with other related subject areas in Social Studies. I am passionate about helping students build the academic and personal skills they need to be successful – in both their present and future studies.
Overall, I believe learning should be investigative and inquiry-led, and should grow from working on real-world social justice issues, which Social Studies subjects are ideally placed to explore, and I aim for my students to hone their critical thinking skills. It is important to me that I provide as much mentoring and support to my students as possible.
I hold BA and graduate degrees in Modern History, and I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA), which is a Master's-level teaching credential.
I thrive when working closely with students and making learning as enjoyable as possible. I favor a project-based approach which focuses on tangible skills alongside content, including how to engage in academic debates, analyze source materials, and present arguments. I prioritize writing skills and ensure that leaners fully understand how they can succeed in assessment contexts.
