About Dan

I have been in the local area for over 40 years and have a great knowledge of all 5 major the rivers here as well as a few secret spots that get overlooked by many. I also have been building custom fishing rods for most of that time and selling materials and completed rods to the public. I can set most people up with all the equipment they need for a day on the river.

I love talking with people especially about fishing! I get to help new fishers and rod builders as the refine their technique and become more proficient in their craft. It is always fun talking with those who are able to teach me as well since you should never stop learning new things.

I worked for a while with someone who wanted to start a class teaching fly tying to high school students. That worked into rod building and as I moved around, I eventually worked and went to school at the local community college and ended up doing outreach classes through that and our local activity center.

I was a river guide for salmon steelhead and trout through the 80s and early 90s and started building fishing rods as early as 1970 and selling components in 1989. I have experience in all facets of graphite blank manufacturing as well as bamboo. I have been addicted to fishing since I was 6 years old and started fly fishing in the late 60s!

I worked with local community colleges and extention services teaching classes in casting, fly tying, rod building and other adventures I have mentioned previously.

About the lesson

Most of the work I have done with students has been in rod building classes. I try to walk each individual through the process of learning how to build the rod of their dreams and one that they can enjoy on the river and be proud to let others try.

I also enjoy teaching people how to "read water" this knowledge alone can cut the amount of time a person looks for fish and increases the time they are actually catching fish! In the past we have offered Reading the Water classes as demand arrises or by individual needs.

I have worked with all ages of people in fishing, fly tying and rod building. I find there is no set standard as to when a person wants to learn to do something, they just have to get started!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If you decide to hire a guide, take a class or... don't hesitate to ask questions of the person you plan to hire. If it's to be a guide trip, ask about the local water and info that only someone who is out there daily might know.
