About JJ

I get excited when something new clicked for a student. I also get excited when I see a student overjoyed simply by the love of music. Above all, though, I get excited when a student teaches ME something new!

I've been a repair technician for 21 years, so I know all the ins and outs of how instruments work, and I've always been able to spot when a musician's trouble are coming from their own errors or from an instrument that isn't working quite right. I can often hear a problem with an instrument just by hearing it played. My favorite parts of that job were seeing a student's eyes when they saw their first rental instrument and giving a newly repaired, properly functioning instrument back to them when they thought it all their fault.

I received a BA in Music from Washington State University in 1998 and went into repair because of a lack of good technicians. Now that my hands won't let me repair full time anymore I want to give my time to keeping students in music as long as possible so they can enjoy the educational benefits of being involved in music, and simply because music is fun! Music should always be fun! Yes, there is some hard work involved in learning, but the fun aspects should make all that hard work worth the effort.

I've been teaching instrument repair for the last 4 years at a company that teaches the trade. Other than rehearing with hits and worship bands this is my first foray into private lessons.

I hold a BA in Music from Washington State University. I've also been a repair technician fro 21 years. I've also been a worship leader off and on since 2004.

About the lesson

I want to find out what experience level any new student is at. Those who are brand new to music will always start at square 1, but those with some experience will require some assessments, not only in where theire strengths and weaknesses lie, but also in what kind of music they enjoy playing and listening to. It's always best to play music that's both fun and educational at the same time. This process will likely take 2-3 weeks.
