About Gary
Throughout my 4 years of tutoring, I've made a number of changes to my teaching methods in order to optimize both the speed at which my clients learn and the amount of information they retain. The human brain is a context machine and, for this reason, I always ensure that my clients are exposed to new information in a manner that is both engaging and representative of how they will encounter it in a testing or real-world environment. In effect, rather than teaching my students concepts before they approach problems, I find it much more effective to begin with problems and work backwards (as one must do during an exam).
Of all the people in my life who have had a profound positive impact on me and my character, the vast majority are teachers and mentors. Teachers have the power not only to instill knowledge and encourage curiosity, but help students become the best version of themselves. For this reason, I strive to bring out the best in my students and provide them with all of the guidance they need to be successful. Nothing compares to seeing my clients ace the exam they were unsure about a week before or finally acquire the ACT score they needed to attend their dream college. The students are what make my work fulfilling, and they are the reason I can say with confidence that I whole-heartedly enjoy what I do as a professional.
I received my first tutoring requests upon earning a 35/36 in the math portion of the ACT (99th Percentile). During my first couple years at Louisiana State University, I tutored ACT Math for high school students. By my junior year, I was regularly tutoring German Language for university students seeking to pass their exams or maintain their speaking skills outside of the semester.
I tutored for 4 years in order to put myself through undergrad and earn my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (as well as a minor in German Language). Operating both as a student and as a tutor allowed me to gain insight regarding what methods and approaches work best not only when preparing for examinations, but for retaining information in the long-term.

I begin with a brief interactive examination to evaluate the student's strengths and weaknesses. From there, I create a lesson plan tailored either to topics that could use review or concepts that will help the client score well on an upcoming exam.
The majority of my clients fall into two categories: high school students seeking to improve their ACT Math scores and German students (in both high school and university) looking to improve their understanding of topics needed to score well on exams.
A tutor can be an excellent resource for clarifying tricky concepts and practicing existing skills, but learning a language is a full-time job. The FSI (Foreign Service Institute) estimates that it will take an individual approximately 750 hours of concentrated, effective studying to become fluent in German. While a tutor can ensure that you don't get stuck on frustrating topics or learn ineffectively, it is incredibly important to make german a part of your life. Watch movies in german, play video games in german, talk to yourself in german, and don't stop there! Do anything you can to immerse yourself, and you'll find that much of the learning that takes place in the human mind occurs passively.

Great tutor for German!
I had Gary held me with math for the ACT. He helped me so much! He was great at breaking everything down with me and staying patient even when I was getting overwhelmed. Gary is so smart and a great tutor!
I was having trouble with my intermediate German classes and Gary was extremely helpful in explaining and working through my mistakes. I definitely recommend him, I actually learned the material and passed my final with his help.
He broke concepts down into simple manageable pieces. I'm not sure how I would have done in simulation methods without him.

Details
To all prospective clients, I offer a 30-minute interactive evaluation free of charge. This allows me not only to assess what topics should be highlighted in the following sessions, but also give the client an opportunity to ensure that my teaching methods are to their liking. All following tutor sessions cost $40/hr. I also offer a free 1-hour tutor session to a client if they refer another student who purchases their first session.
