About Jacob

Hey future students! I am Jacob Shepherd, a 4-year varsity golf alumni of North Gwinnett High School. Golf has been a competitive passion of mine since I was a kid. Since age 11, every day after school and every day over the summers I was at the golf course. My summers were full of competitive tournaments and long training sessions. As for my career at North Gwinnett, I led the team at the 1-spot position each year I played (Junior Year I underwent back surgery and was unable to play), and I hold the all-time record of lowest round any North Gwinnett bulldog has ever shot. After suffering a spinal disc injury and deciding to not pursue a conpetitive golf career, I have found great inspiration in teaching the game of golf to students with various levels of skill. I would love for you to be a Shep's School of Golf student, and hope to hear from you soon.

I got started teaching as a player. I had a student last summer that I taught 2 days/ week as my first ever client.

About the lesson

With a new student, I will diagnose their individual golf swing starting with the grip. The first thing someone does when they swing a golf club is pick it up. It only makes sense that this is where we would start. After diagnosing the grip, i will move to the setup... or the stance that the student takes over the ball in attempt to hit it. Next thing to diagnose is the takeaway from the ball, leading to the "top" of the swing. After this, I will see what kind of transition the student makes into the downswing leading to impact. The final step is the throughswing and the finish. I know this may sound like alot, but we will not move onto the next diagnostic stage until the one previous to it has been mastered. Things like athleticism, balance, height, and strength will all play a part in how I teach one student differently than the next.

I have worked with mostly younger teenagers and pre-teens who have decent athletic ability and wanted to try golf as their sport. Nonetheless, I am no stranger to the golf swing and can teach any age group at any ability.

Do not get suckered into paying $70-$80+ dollar country club prices to learn how to golf. There is just as good if not better instruction out there that costs less money.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about how seriously they want to take this game, and if course this can change. My point is.. how serious my students approach the game greatly effect how I plan to teach them and build their minds. Yes, I said build their minds; the mind is the most important part of golf.
