About Jan
I will begin with my motto: "If you don't understand what I am saying or showing, that is MY problem, not YOUR problem." To me, teaching is about communicating, and if I am not communicating effectively, it is up to ME to figure out HOW to do that for each individual learning style. My full-time job is as the Adobe Trainer (since 2008) for Clemson University where I teach faculty, staff and students how to use the Adobe Programs. I am also an Instructor (since 2011) at Clemson and teach a for-credit class called Adobe Digital Design where I teach my students how Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop work as seperate programs, but also work together as a total design package.
My objectives, whether in teaching, training or consulting, are to provide my students/customers with the information they need, in a style that is right for them, using examples that are personally meaningful. My desire is not to merely show someone how to do something; I also want them to know why they are choosing specific programs and tools to complete a specific task.
I LOVE helping people get to know the Adobe programs. I love seeing "ah ha" moments...and I love knowing that what I teach someone will directly enable them to create useful products of their own. I also love challenges. If you want to learn something about an Adobe program and I am not currently that familiar with it, I will do the research, figure out the process and teach it to you so that you don't have to waste your time on YouTube videos!

My Master's degree is in science, and I have worked as a freelance scientific illustrator since 1981. In the mid-1990's, I was working as a Computer-Based Training author for the Medical University of Charleston and things were transitioning from "paper-based" art to digital art. I eventually ended up at Clemson University as a Learning Management trainer and got an opportunity to teach some of the Adobe programs. Over time my job transitioned to teaching only the Adobe programs to our faculty, staff and students. About 11 years ago I created a for-credit Adobe class that any student in any department could take (as the only Adobe classes were, and still are, largely restricted to specific majors).

My instruction process follows a series of questions and their answers and the instruction outcome is customized based on the student's current knowledge level, goals and deadlines. A person who wants, for example, to learn Photoshop for personal reasons would not be the same as for a person who suddenly has a job requirement to do something very specific in Photoshop and needs to get up to speed on that task as quickly as possible.
Also, if someone has a particular task in mind, my job would be to figure out the best program (or set of programs) to achieve their goals. i.e. sometimes someone might THINK they need to learn a specific program to do a task, but a different program would work better for that task.
A standard set of questions would be:
What do you need/want to do?
Do you have examples of the final goal?
Do you have any current experience in the program?
Do you have a deadline?
Each of these questions and their answers (along with the inevitable follow-up questions and answers) help me build a training path that is customized to that specific student.
Look for someone who is invested in getting you to understand what you are doing, not just be capable of doing it. The less you understand what you are doing, the more likely it is that you will forget how to do it. Also, the more you understand what you are doing, the more likely it is that you will be able to connect learning in one program with learning in another program.
Clemson University participates in a graduate-student event called the Three Minute Thesis. In this event, students have 3 minutes, and one slide, to describe their research (what it is, why it is important, and what the outcome was).
Their one slide is the only visual they have and it needs to be able to, at a glance, reinforce what they are saying so that the words come to life and complex research can be explained visually.
I worked with two students who had gotten to the finals to teach them the Adobe program which would improve their artwork, and both won their section of the competition. Yay!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why do I need to learn this? Is it a personal desire? An assignment? A means to another end? What is the beginning, middle and end goal?
