About George

George Hess is an award winning, educator, guitarist, composer/arranger and author. He has performed professionally for over 40 years with artist such as Jim Nabors, Frank Mantooth, Rufus Reid, the Osmonds, Ryo Kawasaki and Myron Floren as well as his own groups. He is the author of Creating Music with Notion and writes a regular column for Music Education Asia. Dr. Hess presents clinics and workshops throughout the world both in person and online. George is an Apple Distinguished Educator, and a member of the board of directors for Technology for MusicEducation (TI:ME). Prior to coming to Singapore he taught jazz, theory and technology at Central Michigan University for ten years. Dr. Hess holds degrees from the University of Northern Colorado and the Berklee College of Music.

I've been teaching for 40 years, ever since I graduated from Berklee. In the early 80s, I taught guitar at Johnny Smith Music in Colorado. For those who don't know, Johnny was a famous, world-class jazz guitarist and his signature Gibson guitar is one of the most highly regarded archtops around.
Eventually, I decided to move into college teaching and went to grad school at UNC. I've been a professor for almost 25 years now.

As mentioned in my bio, I have a doctorate from the University of Northern Colorado and undergraduate degree from Berklee, both some of the country's premier jazz and music technology schools.

About the lesson

The first step is to understand what student's goals and aspirations are and then to evaluate their abilities. From there, we can devise a learning plan that will help them reach those goals in the shortest time.

I don't want lifelong students. I will share my knowledge with you and show you how to learn and then expect you to move on.

I've worked with all ages, but for the most part, I've taught college students and music teachers. I will accept any level music technology student, but for guitar, you should be at an intermediate level or beyond.

There's a difference between teaching and learning. Make sure the teacher you choose will focus on you and what you are learning, rather than teaching what they want you to know.
