About Garrett

I’ve been teaching guitar lessons since 2001, and I’ve been playing guitar since 1981. My years of experience combines well with my Bachelors Of Music in Jazz Guitar and Composition to make me sensitive and responsive to my students’ individual learning styles. I love working with all age groups and all skill levels.

Like teaching and tutoring college-level English, teaching guitar puts me into contact with a variety of people. I also enjoy the challenge of keeping such a wide variety of students interested in playing guitar.

When I started teaching K-8 general music, I found that I wanted to teach guitar lessons as well. Even after I stopped teaching K-8 music, I continued to teach guitar lessons. In essence, I wanted to teach other guitar to share the joy I've always had in playing guitar.

I earned Bachelors degree with honors from Five Towns college in 1999, in both Jazz Guitar and Music Composition. Since 2001, I’ve been teaching guitar lessons. I taught K-8 general music from 2000-2003; however, I prefer to work with children in individual lessons. Since 2011, I've been teaching college-level English. Teaching professionally makes me aware of individual students' needs and learning styles.

About the lesson

In my experience as both a guitar teacher and college-level writing instructor, I see working with individual students as a matter of paying attention to his or her needs and learning style. Some guitar students learn best from written music; some learn best by ear. I have even started students with music theory so that they can learn about music through songwriting.

I've worked with students ranging in age from 8-70 years of age. Among this wide age range, I've also worked with all skill levels.

That's a good question. I think the number one question: does the teacher seem passionate about both the guitar and teaching the guitar? I know, this is a hard one to answer before you take lessons with someone. All the same, I think it's the most important one.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Another good but hard question. I would say a student has to know what he or she needs before asking the teacher. If you need more explanation on a topic, then ask for my explanation; if you need more time to practice, ask for more time. As a student, your needs matter.
