About John
Hi, my name is John. I have been a Freelance Guitar Instructor for 20 years and have been playing the guitar, since I was 16. I am an enthusiastic teacher and I love teaching for so many reasons. The way I teach is simple, I teach my students how to play correctly while having fun. Whether you are a beginner or someone with a few years experience, take lessons with me and I promise that you will get better and enjoy your lessons. I look forward to meeting you and helping you reach your goals! I also offer lessons via Skype or FaceTime.
I enjoy teaching because of the different ideas and tastes each student has. Also, it is rewarding when a student accomplishes their goal(s). I especially enjoy when a student has great enthusiasm to learn.
After a few years of playing the guitar, I knew that it was something that I wanted to do professionally, both as a performer and a teacher. I started teaching in person's homes in the late 80s and as a P/T freelancer since then. I find teaching enjoyable. However, I usually limit myself to 4 to 6 students total.
I have a B.S. in Business Economics, SUNY Oneonta, Oneonta, NY. 1986. I have taught freelance for 20 years in New York and Florida. I have been in multiple Cover Bands and Original Music Bands and I currently perform as a Solo Cover Artist.

My teaching philosophy for new students is to findout what genre(s) of music and songs they want to learn and play. Also, to find out what, if any experience they have. Keeping the lessons fun is important. Additionally, proper technique and the fundamentals of music theory combined with the music/songs you want to learn. The ultimate goal is to get the student eventually to the point where they can teach themselves.
I have worked mainly with Adults of all ages and occassionally children.
I would suggest getting a teacher that is going to help you reach your goals. If you want to learn Rock or Blues or Jazz, Pop, etc., seek out that type of teacher. For example, if you want to learn some popular Rock songs, you probably would not want to go to a Teacher that specializes in Jazz or a Teacher who is going to teach you how to read music for several years and not what you really want to learn. Please ask questions.
I hosted an Open Mic/Open Jam every Tuesday night at Pegasus Lounge in Tampa, Florida from 9 PM to 3 AM for 5 months.

Details
Yes! My rates are $40/Hr. I travel to the student as I am a 'freelance' Teacher, who does not maintain a Home Studio for Lessons. I do recommend 1 Hour Weekly and there is no need to pay for your lessons a month in advance as many music stores and music schools do. I may discount the rate for a group lesson, depending on the number of students and the travel distance.
