About Jacob

I'm a self taught electric, acoustic and bass guitar player and have been giving private lessons to friend and family for over a decade. I'm also a freelance audio engineer with professional training and over a decade of experience in the freelance music industry. Although I taught myself guitar over 20 years ago, I now know the music theory behind what took me sooo long to figure out on my own. With today's new multimedia infrastructure I am excited to announce I will be giving fun, engaging guitar lessons in all genres for electric, acoustic or bass guitar.

I enjoy introducing people to the magic of music composition. If I can inspire just one new guitar player to stick with it as a lifelong passion, then that makes all of my work with it.

I was interning at Music Row Studios in Nashville, TN, when my boss asked me to give him acoustic guitar lessons after work. At the time, I was interning for free in exchange for real-world experience in the studio. Knowing that I needed money at the time and impressed by the playing he had heard me perform in the studio, he paid me on the side to teach him the basics of open chord acoustic guitar, and I agreed. That's when I realized that I enjoyed teaching as well as playing guitar and bass.

I attended Pro Media Training in Nashville, TN, in 2009 and received a Music Career Readiness Certification from the school. Since then, I've worked as a freelance audio engineer, writing music and playing in different bands, playing multiple genres of music while providing local lessons to people in my small town and surrounding areas. I have over 20 years of experience playing guitar. I've written hundreds of songs, recorded hundreds more, and taught over 20 people how to play guitar.

About the lesson

Together with the student, we identify their personal goals and work to develop a customized lesson plan! So whether your goal is to become a rock n' roll shred master or become proficient enough to play along to your favorite songs, I help students learn the most enjoyable ways to practice guitar and avoid the pitfalls that I often fell into myself when I was learning to play guitar 20 years ago.

My first student, my boss and mix engineer at Music Row, was probably in his early 40's at the time. My next student was my younger brother, who was 16. After that, I began posting listings in music forums and what was back then myspace groups. Mostly teenagers to young adults, but occasionally I'll have an older student. Almost all of my students are beginners. My goal is to get my students to a place where they can teach themselves any advanced techniques because they have fundamentals down.

Make sure your teacher has a firm understanding of the specific style you have in mind because there are countless stylistic differences between genres of music. For example, a country guitarist might want to play an acoustic instrument or a specific style of electric. Also, make sure it's fun. If you are not having fun, then it's not going to grab your interest in a way that will make you actually want to pick up the guitar. You don't want the practice to feel like work.

My fiance and I just got back from a two-week vacation/work trip. She is a concert photographer named Nina Martin, and her studio is called Stellar Photo. She runs a website eastcoast-live.com where she photographs and reviews shows and festivals along the east coast. We recently shot a series of shows in anticipation of relaunching the website after the COVID shutdowns put a halt to live events. It was nice to spend time together and being around so much music. Music is our passion.

$30 for half-hour sessions and $50 for hour sessions. I create customized lesson plans for the student, free of charge, and returning students receive discounts.
