About Louis

I have more than 30 years of experience in teaching guitar and bass lessons. I’ve taught many different types of students—young children, senior citizens, and everything in between. I’ve taught and coached students who have just wanted to play a couple of their favorite songs as well as students who were looking for the necessary skills to get into various music programs/ensembles.

I honed my music teaching skills by working for several North Jersey schools of music (Village Music in Butler, Bach to Rock Music in Riverdale, and Musician’s Corner in Pompton Plains) from 1988 to 2006. I also spent a couple of summers teaching at the National Guitar Workshop in Connecticut in the early 2000s.

I’ve been teaching music privately for over 10 years, and with each passing year, I become even more passionate about what I do.

I strive for a relaxed approach towards teaching music. I stress to my students that slow, deliberate practice will yield results. If a student is moving forward at a comfortable pace for them, it is a good thing. I believe that the most effective way students absorb material is by varying my approach as per student and task at hand. I reinforce the importance of daily practice and realistic goals; 15 minutes of focused practice goes a long way at any part of one’s music development.

I studied the guitar with two respected teachers during my high school years. My focus was rock and popular music. After high school I attended College and studied music theory, piano and majored in classical guitar. I also joined the school jazz ensemble. I have studied percussion for several years as well. This has given me a solid foundation in playing and reading different rhythms.

After college, I sought out respected teachers in my area as well as attended different guitar workshops around the USA so I could continue my music studies. I currently play society-type gigs and teach guitar, bass, and ukulele.

I enjoy playing Rock, Blues, Jazz, Classical, and fingerstyle music. I primarily play electric and acoustic guitar; however, I do occasionally play professional bass gigs.

I know that every student has different aspirations as to why he or she wants to learn to play an instrument. The advantage of one-on-one lessons compared to a class with a set curriculum is that the lessons are catered to one student. I strive to put together lesson plans catered to each student—lesson plans that have students playing the music they enjoy as well as learning the necessary music fundamentals to become musicians.

I love online teaching! Advances in video meeting software in the last few years have improved leaps and bounds. I have been teaching online via Zoom for 6 months and I am very pleased with the way it has been working out. Simple and great sound!

Everyone benefits from the time and travel costs saved. Transferring lesson plans and easily recording whole lessons to video for easy reference is a great resource as well.

I can be contacted via email between scheduled lessons to assist a student if they are confused about a part of a lesson plan. I’m appreciative that they take the time to reach out to me instead of attending the next lesson unprepared.

About the lesson

I find it best to create custom lessons for which my students can view via tablet, computer, or print out in PDF form. I utilize technology such as video, slow down, and notation programs to facilitate lesson plans.
