About Forest

The first thing I want to get out of the way is that I do not have a degree in music education. What I do have is fifteen years singing, playing guitar and bass in bands, and writing songs by myself and with partners and groups. In that time I also attended the School for Music Vocations at Southwestern Community College for two years, where I learned music theory, some arranging, a baseline knowledge of jazz piano, and was introduced to Pro Tools and basic studio engineering work. I have helped run home recording studios as well as recording my own bands' work in professional studios in Des Moines and St. Paul.

All of this is to say that while I may be far from mastery, I am knowledgeable in a wide swathe of the skills necessary to becoming a competent and confident musician.

I offer beginning and intermediate lessons in guitar, bass, and music theory and have a holistic approach to teaching these. If you wish to learn guitar, I will also introduce you to many concepts of theory to help you understand the instrument and the relationships between chords. On the flipside, if you want lessons in theory, I will probably require you to use an instrument to ground your knowledge rather than having it be a mess of letters and numbers of which you are conceptually aware. If any of these other fields of study which I have mentioned interest you, we can integrate those as well. And lastly, if you surpass my level I will be happy to connect you with people I know from the music community who can take you where you want to go.

My name is Forest, and I want to help you learn and grow your love for music in a comfortable, casual environment.

I enjoy the problem-solving aspect of playing and songwriting. I enjoy observing the different ways in which one can make sound and finding the best fit for a song or group. Lastly, I think that there is nothing more satisfying than playing a song right for the first time.

About the lesson

I will assess your current level and have a few materials onhand to start from there. I know that everyone is different, so I don't want to go into any lesson with assumptions about how I should help you.

I will start by asking $15 per half hour or $25 per hour. If you have quotes from other teachers at similar or higher skill levels, I will be happy to look at those, but these rates take into account materials and prep time needed to help individual students.
