About Robert

I'm a working guitarist, composer, songwriter and educator with a Masters of Music from New York University. I've played professionally in many styles--from ska to country to klezmer--and try to ignite passion and direction with all of my students, regardless of their musical goals. The feeling of the connecting with a student is one of life's purest joys.

I've been teaching professionally since the age of 14 at the local music store where I initally began my guitar studies.

I received a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Creative Writing from the University of Houston, Moores School of Music, and a Masters of Music in Jazz from New York University.

About the lesson

The first task is always to get a feel for the student's motives for taking lessons, in addition to developing an understanding of the music they already enjoy. In identifying this, I try to develop a unique curriculum based on their personality, musical taste and most importantly, goals.

As a Masters student at NYU, I taught undergraduate music elective courses privately and in groups, as well as private lessons for Musical Theater Writing graduate students at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. I've had a great deal of experience teaching young children--as young as 4--and often found myself teaching their parents as well. I enjoy teaching students who are first starting just as I do university students who are looking to make their career in music.

The most important part about "the right teacher" is finding one who will understand, motivate and inspire you. I try to do just that.

At a guitar store in downtown New York I found myself playing in the company of Chuck Lorre and Hampton Fancher(screenwriter for Blade Runner). I also met a new student for the first time who wanted to learn Smoke on the Water as much as he wanted to learn a Bouree by Bach.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Is the teacher listening to me? What kind of music do I want to learn? How much time am I willing to dedicate in order to achieve my goals? Do I want to write my own music? Do I want to improvise? How do I feel about Led Zeppelin? How do I feel about Taylor Swift?
