About Grant

I really focus on the developing a love for the guitar and emphasizing playing and speaking music through the guitar in the beginning, and then studying grammar later.

I really try to understand students personalities and help them play the music they identify with.

I like how every day offers something new as well as seeing students take to the guitar and incorporate what they learn as a meaningful part of their lives.

I always looked up to my guitar teacher and was coaching sports when a parent asked if I taught the guitar. I was focusing on physical therapy at the time, but found the connection to people, the work, and my talents lacking.

I realized the guitar was the best way to connect to people, use my talents, and enjoy my work. I put out an add and got hired within a week!

I've been teaching for three years now and have learned a lot from my students and have pushed myself to learn more about music and the guitar.

I have played the guitar for 13 years, taken lessons for 10 years, played in bands, and write my own music. I have taught the guitar for 3 years now.

I love the guitar and that's why I play it and teach it. The ability to play music I connect with and to help others to connect to the music they like is great.

I focus on the skills that students need to achieve their goals as well as give them the tools to succeed on their own.

About the lesson

I do a free trial lesson!

I give something for students to learn the first day of class. I like to get to know their personality, interests, musical tastes and goals to better shape what skill or song I teach.

Goals are the most important thing when starting any activity. Some students want to play the guitar to be rock stars, some want to play it as a release from a stressful worklife, some people want to play it for the education. I ask students about their personal goals and we develop a lesson plan to achieve it.

I mostly have worked with students in the 8-12 range, but have a couple teenagers, adults, and seniors.

Some students like pop and hip hop and I show them how the guitar can be used to imitate other instruments or the vocal lines.

For students interested in rock I teach them the scales and philosophy of how to play rock and roll and heavy metal.

For country students I teach the chords and licks for these tunes.

For jazz students its about taking a step back, going over the blues and gospel genres that jazz stems from and learning some guitar scales. Then we dive into playing chord charts and rhythm reading.

While I focus on the traditional teaching style, I do emphasize that students explore and play the guitar on their own time as well.

Analagous to a personal trainer, I may only see my students for 30-60 minutes a week. While I give plenty of practice materials, there is still a responsibility on the student to practice intently for 15 minutes daily when first learning the guitar.

Teacher and Students in music have mutal responsibilities to each other.

I've been enjoying hearing my students begin to improvise and experiment using the knowledge they have gained so far. Music should be exploratory, whether into a genre or into oneself, so I'm glad to see that they are seeing the same thing and incorporating it as a meaningful part of their lives.

Speaking for myself, I tend to want the ends without the means, and learning music can feel slow at times and require some dedication, but that is why it is such a meaningful activity.

I would try to enjoy the journey on the guitar and remember that there are millions of dusty guitars in the world, but yours if you practice consistently will be clean and making music!
