About Phil

Greetings! Phil here. I've been playing guitar professionally since 1992, when I founded the King Louie Band, and also began teaching students.

My focus is on each individual student. We all have different ways of learning, and different goals for what we want to achieve. I alter my curriculum to conform to each student. We'll start playing songs as soon as possible. I've found the faster we start playing tunes, the more likely the student will be to continue on with the instrument.

Several years ago, I began teaching part-time at the Music Compound in Sarasota, Florida. The pandemic forced us to move all lessons online. I've taught remotely exclusively since March 2020. This is important because there's definitely a learning curve from teaching in person to teaching over Zoom or Skype. Now that I'm comfortable with it, I feel the positives of teaching remotely far outweigh the negatives.

I specialize in blues, but teach all genres and skill levels.

I love to see the look on a student's face when he or she is able to really grasp a concept, riff or tune. I work to get students playing (and hopefully singing!) songs as quickly as possible - much more fun than endlessly practicing scales! Although we will become familiar with the basics of music theory, as well.

I've had a passion for teaching since I was in the 5th grade, when I began working with developmentally challenged students. I began teaching guitar when I became a professional guitarist in 1992 and founded the King Louie Band in Sarasota, Florida (see my YouTube channel for samples of my music).

I have taught many students since, and am experienced teaching one-on-one, groups, band camps and remotely online.

Two years ago, I began teaching part-time at the Music Compound in Sarasota, Florida. Since the pandemic, all my lessons have gone virtual.

I specialize in blues guitar, but am fluent in a variety of styles and comfortable teaching all skill levels.

I began teaching myself guitar at the age of 8. I played violin in the school orchestra and sang bass with the school chorus from 6th-12th grades.

In 1992, I founded the King Louie Band in Sarasota, Florida. Thousands of gigs later at ecery type of venue imaginable, my band is still playing today. I serve as bandleader, lead guitarist, lead vocalist and sole songwriter. We have two albums out of both original and cover material, have opened for the Marshall Tucker Band and Ted Nugent, and served as the backing band for California blues legend Chris Cain.

About the lesson

I first determine the skill level of the student, and his/her specific goals for the instrument. I then tailor each lesson to focus on building fundamentals at a speed where the student feels comfortable. I get students playing and, hopefully, singing tunes as soon as possible. The quicker students can begin playing songs, the more fun they will have, and the more likely they will be to continue playing.

I have worked with many different types of students, from young to old, from all skill levels. Currently, half of my students are kids and half are adults, ranging from never having played before, to beginner, to intermediate and advanced.

I cater each lesson to that particular student, always keeping in mind his/her goals for the instrument and their particular learning process. I always try to make sure a student understands the concept before moving on, and check regularly to make sure I'm not covering too much ground too fast.

I would make sure they have experience teaching remotely online, as that is likely the setting for most lessons now. (I have been teaching online exclusively since March 2020, and there's definitely a learning curve from teaching in person.)

A teacher should be flexible enough to alter curriculum based on the learning style and goals of a particular student.

I've had the good fortune to share the stage with many luminaries, including the Marshall Tucker Band, Ted Nugent, Chris Cain, Johnny Rawls, and Sugar Blue, who won a Grammy for his incendiary harmonica playing on the Rolling Stones' "Miss You."

I've gotten to meet and chat with several of my influences, including B.B. King, Tab Benoit, Magic Slim, and Tommy Castro - to name a few.

But what makes me proudest is when I see lightbulbs go off above my students heads when they grasp new musical concepts for the first time. There's nothing better than that.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How long until I start playing songs? I get my students playing and hopefully singing tunes as soon as possible. I have found over years of teaching guitar that the quicker we move to playing actual songs, the more likely it is the student will stick with the instrument. If all we do is practice scales, it gets old pretty quickly. Above all, learning an instrument should be FUN!

My prices are as follows: $25 for a half-hour lesson, $45 for an hour lesson.

All lessons will be conducted over Zoom or Skype, so students can be literally anywhere, as long as they have an internet connection.

I was forced to get comfortable teaching virtually due to the pandemic. Now I find that the benefits of being able to teach and learn remotely outweigh the negatives. But it is very important that you find a teacher who has experience teaching online. I've been teaching this way exclusively since March 2020.
