About Dan

With a degree in Jazz Studies from City College of New York, and having spent time studying Classical Guitar Performance and Pedagogy at the Crane School of Music, Dan Saulpaugh teaches guitar to a wide range of skill levels (beginner to advanced) in a variety of styles. Lessons are tailored to each student's particular interests and needs. Basic musicianship concepts such as sight reading and music theory are paired with specific stylistic explorations to create a curriculum that suites each student's development.

Additionally, Saulpaugh has played in several projects in the greater NYC area as a band leader and sideman since 2013, and draws on his years of performance to enhance his teaching. His music can be heard on his website (concealed information)

I enjoy seeing the self confidence that learning a skill like music gives my students. It's rewarding watching a student begin to teach themselves things that interest them because I have helped them gain the tools to do so.

I have a BFA in Jazz Studies: Guitar from City College of New York. I also completed course work towards a B.M. in Classical Guitar Performance at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, where I also studied guitar pedogogy and compostion.

I have 5 years of experience playing as a band leader and session player in the greater NYC area.

About the lesson

First we discuss what the student's long-term goals are musically. Based on that we set up several short term goals that work towards that. As part of that process we establish small mico-goals that can be met every time they pick up the guitar, that slowly build towards the larger goals.

These include things like how to hold the guitar and tune it, up through scale patterns and voice-leading exercises depending on the student's level.
