I decided to take guitar lessons when I retired, and had three different instructors before I met Kenneth Harper, I have been taking lessons from Ken for almost three years now and feel that he has helped me more than any of the others. Ken has the knowledge and skills to do a superb job. He not only shows/teaches you the chords but also teaches the theory you need to understand how things relate. Ken has always gone the extra mile to help me. Another benefit is that Ken is a great luthier and can help get your guitar sounding and feeling great. If you're like me and tired of trying to learn from CD's and books and need to take it to the next level, have I got the guy for you. I saw Ken's ad, made the call and glad that I did. A year later I'm doing things I would have never learned on my own. Ken's passionate about the guitar and wants you to enjoy it as much as he does. And not just the playing part but also understanding the theory behind it and he does it in a very enjoyable way (not like homework). He adjusts his lessons based on the type music you like and seems to be able to figure out the best teaching technique that works best for you. I'm convinced that if he didn't teach guitar he'd be a shrink. He's a talented musician and teacher and if you're serious about learning to play, you'll have fun doing it and you won't be disappointed.

I had been dabbling on guitar for awhile learning a few songs and licks on YouTube. I generally would learn the beginning of a song, get bored, and move along to another song and repeat. I needed to do something different. I found Ken’s advertisement and thought I would take a chance. I called Ken and we set up my first lesson. Right away I knew I had found the right guy to teach me guitar.

Ken has a very relaxed style and makes you feel comfortable. He provides me with feedback giving the right mix of praise and suggestions to improve. He also is a great guitar player in his own right. I enjoy listening to how he plays hoping I can learn more.

Ken prepares my lesson with my skill level in mind and teaches me the entire song from start to finish. I not only learn the chords, note counting, and rhythm but also the lead and how to improvise. No more jumping from song to song. We have learned songs that I never knew existed. Ken mixes in music theory with his lessons. I had a high school band level of music theory from a long time ago. Ken continues to give me little bites of theory that I try to retain and use along the way.

Ken played my guitar and immediately knew the action was too low. I had bought it used and knew very little about guitar set up and repair. I followed Ken’s suggestions and my guitar has never sounded better.

I think my favorite part of my lesson is when we jam together. One of us will play a chord progression and the other will jam on top of that. We swap back and forth and it is fun. I am not very good at it yet but hope to improve.
