About Jennifer
History and government knowledge will follow students throughout their lives and impact their views of the world. They are also classes with a reputation of being boring and based in the ability to memorize facts that are often presented out of context. My teaching philosophy is based on understanding why certain events happened and how governmental structures operate in reality, which makes the memorization components of middle/high school level coursework easier to accomplish. A more comprehensive understanding will better prepare students for writing essays, papers, and success in college.
I made the decision when I was 35 to return to college and complete my degrees in both political science and history at the University of Central Florida. This fall I will begin my graduate program in public history (I have started tutoring to help with graduate tuition). I ran lock down study groups for my student peers, who were much younger and had fewer organizational skills, and provided one on one help. I have also run lock down reviews for some local high school students (my son's friends) for their AP social studies courses and they all earned no lower than a 4.
There is a moment where students find something in the coursework they really enjoy. That interest and excitement is worth every moment.

1) I need to best understand the goals. Are we working towards an AP test? Helping with a paper or project? Catching up after missing some school? Generally having difficulty with the subject?
2) I would like to see a graded assignment (with teacher directions) to get a feel of where the student is and what the expectation are for the class. We can work around that, but it will save time.
3) Please send a list of course materials and any upcoming assignments.
