About Lisa

I have a PhD in Political Science from the University of South Carolina. I have taught for more than 20 years, including 10 years in an online learning environment. I have worked with elementary school through college age students in classroom, small group, and one-on-one settings. I also have experience working with homeschooled kids, individually and in groups. I love teaching the core subjects of Social Studies, History, Government and Politics, and English. And I enjoying sharing my enthusiasm with the students I tutor. My approach to teaching and tutoring centers on active engagement and interactive learning. I firmly believe that no subject is too difficult to learn when students are encouraged and treated with both patience and respect.

I have a PhD in political science with 15+years of teahing experience, both in person and online. I hold several teaching related certfications and have been awarded several awards for teaching and curriculum development. I have taught elementary age to college age students in core subjects, including American Government and Politics, Comparative politics, American history, European history, social students, and study skills.

About the lesson

1) if student is under 18, I prefer to communicate wtih both the student and a parent or legal guardian.

2) I talk or email/text with student/parent to identify student's needs and goals.

3) At our first meeting, I provide a brief overview of the subject to determine student's level of understanding

4) Develop a tutoring plan for multi-session tutoring and periodically revise the plan based on student progress.

5) During tutoring sessions, I actively engage student, talking with student about their current understanding. I often find students know more that they think they do. I also provide activities and online learning materials for use during tutoring sessions as beginningn points for more indepth review of materials.

6) I follow-up tutoring sessions with a brief overview of session, what was reviewed, and student successes.
