About Isabela

I am a fully hands on and from the ground up teacher. I start out by teaching new students how to catch, groom and saddle their horse as well as actual riding. I believe this gives them more appreciation for horses and all the love and work that goes into riding.

I love teaching people of all ages and skill levels the beauty and wonderful experience of riding and caring for horses. I've been riding and working with horses for over 20 years and want to share my skills and passion with other so I might ignite a love for horses in them.

I've been teaching casually since I was in my very early teens. It started with teaching friends and family so they could ride in the mountains with me. I started teaching official lessons in high school to any family or friend who wanted them.

25 years of horse experience. 4 years of guiding trail rides through national parks and other locations.

About the lesson

I start off each lesson, no matter the students skill level, with basic grooming and saddling of the horse. I believe that this allows for a bond to form between the horse and rider which helps immensely with any nerves there might be. I guided them through this process until I am confident they can do so without assistance. If they are younger or unable to lift them saddle, I assist them. I also do this same process after the riding portion of the lesson is complete. I believe that saddling and unsaddling your own horse is important. It give students respect for their tack and their horse. After the horse is unsaddled and brushed I allow my student to put the horse away on their own (if able).

During the riding portion of the lesson, I have the student "warm up" their horse. This allows for the student to get situated in the saddle before we start skill work. For first time lessons, I ask the student to perform a number of basic commands with the horseveo that I may assess their skill and where I want to start with their lessons.

I have worked with all levels and ages. From 2 years old to students well into their 80s. I have also taught students from all ethnicities and walks of life.

My best advice for students looking for a teacher is go meet them in person. If you will be using their horse for lessons, meet the horse as well. If the teacher offers it, do a trial lesson before making any commitments.

My most recent student was a 9 year old who was a good rider under saddle but wanted to learn how to ride bareback after seeing me do so. After a few months of lessons she was trotting around bareback with perfect form and great skill! This made me and her mother very proud! And this skill will help her become a better rider.
