About Lauren

Before I graduated from Loyola University New Orleans, I was a writing tutor at Loyola's Office of Writing and Learning Services from September 2017 to May 2020. I received the tutoring position by winning a Writing Across the Curriculum Award after my philosophy professor nominated me for a paper that I wrote in his class.

As a tutor, I've helped college students work on and improve their own writing in academic papers, personal bios, application essays, creative stories, and many other pieces of writing. I’ve tutored students in all stages of the writing process, including brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, and editing. I’ve also helped students with different essay formats and citation styles, including MLA, APA, and Chicago/Turabian style. Outside of my job, I would frequently work with friends to help them improve their academic papers as well.

I'm passionate about being a writing tutor because I love working with students of different ages, academic backgrounds, levels of experience, and learning styles. I love catering each session to the individual student in order to understand how to most effectively help them develop their skills and succeed. I also just love helping students relax and feel more confident in their abilities by reassuring them that writing is a process, and getting help and feedback is a key part of that process.

I got started teaching during my time working in the Loyola Office of Writing and Learning Services from 2017 to 2020, when I graduated from the university.

I graduated from Loyola University New Orleans with a B.A. in Mass Communication, and I received a minor in English writing. I went through a process of training that involved writing, testing, and mock tutoring at the university before I became a writing tutor in Loyola's Office of Writing and Learning Services in September 2017.

First, I always introduce myself and establish rapport to make the student feel comfortable. At the start of the session, I talk with my new student about the assignment itself and the provided guidelines. I also figure out what phase of the writing process they are in: whether they are in the revision/editing stage with a formatted/completed draft or if they are in the brainstorming stage with nothing written yet at all, or anywhere in between. From there, I work with the student based on how much help they need, going from addressing higher order concerns, such as effectively responding to an instructor’s essay prompt, to lower order concerns, like word choice, brevity, and grammar.

I have worked with college students, including freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. I have mostly worked with students aged 18 to 22, but I have tutored older students as well.

Choose a teacher or tutor who you feel comfortable with, someone who is patient, understanding, and sincerely wants to help you develop your knowledge and skills.

My favorite moment during/after any tutoring session is when my students have expressed gratitude for the help I’ve given them, and I see them walk away with more confidence in their work and their abilities thereafter.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
A student should ask themselves: Where [in the process of doing an assignment] am I? How far can I get on my own? What do I understand? Where do I get confused and/or need help?
