About Lauren
My mission is to make learning engaging, effective and fun!
I hold a Master's degree in Bilingual Education(Spanish & English) from Loyola Marymount University, a Bachelor of Science from University of California, Irvine(UCI), and have taught Kindergarten and First Grade in the Los Angeles Unified School District. I hold additional certifications for reading improvement, including LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) and Orton Gillingham training, ensuring lessons are based in research and the science of reading. With over a decade of experience working with students ages four to 10, I possess the expertise and dedication needed to transform children's reading abilities. I have experience working with children who have dyslexia, children working below grade level, and children who want to improve their reading skills.
Lessons focus on building the essential foundational skills needed for reading success. All lessons follow Orton-Gillingham, a specialized teaching method designed to help children with reading difficulties or dyslexia. Here are some key components:
Structured Phonics:
The Orton-Gillingham method starts with mastery of the basic units of language (i.e. ABCs) and gradually builds up to more complex skills (i.e. multisyllabic words, suffixes, etc.) Lessons break down skills into manageable parts and children progress at their own pace.
Multisensory:
This means that your child will learn through sight, sound, and movement.
Language-based:
A key component of reading and spelling is hearing the individual sounds in words, and being able to blend sounds that make up a word. Lessons work explicitly on sound-symbol relationships in order to accurately read and write.
The goal of using the Orton-Gillingham is to improve children's reading and spelling abilities, ultimately boosting their overall confidence and enjoyment of learning. I adapt each lesson to the unique learning style and needs of each child.
