About Karuna

I have been studying Latin for six years, I am majoring in Latin and Classical Civilizations at one of the top Classics departments in the world, and I plan to teach Latin as a career. I have extensive experience tutoring one-on-one, teaching grammar lessons, and leading spoken Latin lessons.

I have also won many Latin awards, including four gold medals in the National Latin Exam, and am the recipient of a scholarship for teaching Latin that is only given to five students nationwide.

I love the connections that can be made between Latin and other languages, as well as in society today. My research interests are studying women in Ancient Rome and their role in certain political events so I love sharing that knowledge with students, teaching them that Rome was more diverse than most think. I know that some students find translating and identifying forms easier, while others find reading easier, so I will meet you where you are and tailor my lessons to suit your interests.

I have attended numerous conferences about Latin pedagogy and am active in the spoken Latin community, so I constantly learn about new ways to teach Latin that are the most effective. Furthermore, I am earning an education minor.

About the lesson

First, I typically discuss what they are having difficulty with and what they want help with. Then, depending on their experience with Latin and the way they have been taught, along with their interests, I tailor my lessons to suit their needs and interests so that the lesson is engaging.

I've worked with students of all walks of life and Latin backgrounds– from students who have been having difficulty for months to students who need a little reinforcement in addition to their teacher's instruction. I have experience tailoring lessons to meet the needs of dyslexic and other special education students as well.

I would ensure that you were hiring a teacher that shares the learning philosophy that you do and who is willing to tailor lessons to meet your needs and interests. I would also make sure you looked for a teacher who has a passion for not only Latin, but civilization as well, and who believes in growth.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would try to figure out what you need and be honest with yourself– it's better for a teacher to know from the get-go that you need more than a few brush-up lessons than to figure out how behind you are halfway through the lesson. Ask yourself how you learn best and what you find engaging and what you have liked about the teachers you have had in the past.
