About Brigid

I fully customize work for my students. I respond consistently and focus on student achievement. As a parent of two school age children and having taught in public schools for 5 years, I am experienced in identifying and responding to the specific individual needs of young learners.

My favorite thing about being an educator is watching students grow and develop. Students today are plagued with insecurity and it is very rewarding to help propel them towards success be it fast or slow.

My mother was a teacher so I always had teaching on my radar.   I spent several years in management  in the private sector before deciding what was missing in my life.    I had already completed my Bachelor's degree at UNT so I alternatively certified, got hired at Cameron ISD, and never looked back. 



I have been a certified teacher in Texas for several years.   I have taught 4th and 5th grade math and science and also 4the grade ELAR and social studies.   Additionally I have provided summer school and tutorial instruction in junior high level math.

When working with a new student I like to start from the beginning of their typical grade level to assess their understanding.   Assessment is informal and usually the student doesn't even know they're being assessed.   I find it beneficial to move  at a customize space based on ability rather than setting pacing restrictions and trying to race to the end.  



I have worked with students from all demographics, socioeconomic statuses, learning/emotional disorders, and academic abilities.  In Cameron we have a very unique set of students (especially considering the size of our community).  



Find a teacher you are comfortable with.   Students who aren't comfortable can't learn effectively.  Be patient once you've selected a teacher.    Teachers and students have to spend a small amount of time learning how to work together and the educator deserves as much patience as the student.  



Covid threw a wrench in my end of year plans (as it did everyone else) and while it has had me really down, I recently ran into a student and he was so excited to see me that he ran up and hugged me.  He was so horrified that he violated social distancing that he apologized profusely (while still hugging me because he didn't want to let go) and it was just so precious.   I have a great relationship with all of my students but it made me feel so valuable when he reacted that way to seeing me that it is my current favorite experience of my career.

Details

My pacing program involves identification, practice, assessment, and either moving on or reteaching as needed.   I am not averse to having schedules or timelines but I find it contrary to academic performance to focus on a schedule instead of the content.
