About Paul

That's easy....I'm excellent at what I do and that is in getting students to understand math. Too often, teachers teach rules and students learn rules ---Math is not about rules, it's about problem solving and understanding. In teaching, I constantly use transfer, where I take prior knowledge and connect it to new knowledge. Unfortunately, in this country, this is not done - which creates a need for Math tutors! Usually, I get my clients via "word of mouth". With that, please contact me if you need referrels.

the epiphanies from kids after they "get it".

When a students that I tutor, tells me that they are now tutoring their classmates, in school because they don't just learn a rule, they learn all the ins and outs in understanding a concept.

I teach AP Calc in an urban district. Research shows that the passing rate is in lower SES districts is about 21-23%. I love it that in 2011, when I took over the program, there were eleven kids taking the class with 40% passing and now we have over 160 students taking AP Calc and over 110 passed - with 30 of them getting fives.

I love it that I introduced AP Calc-BC into the district.

I love it when I taugh in NYC, in an urban school, where about 24% passed the regents (Algebra !, II and Geometry) and I had over 95% passing each year. (I'm still in contact with these students on facebook)

Started in NYC in 1984.  I thought that I can make a difference, and I know that I have ---look me up on Facebook and get to see/meet my former students - from the Classes of 1989 all the way to the Class of 2017..... While I may be "old", I am considered by all very young...

Taught every level of Mathematics from Remedial Math through and including AP Calculus.   In the summer, I travel the country teaching teachers how to become more effective Calculus teachers in the classroom by changing their paradigm.

They come to my home - I teach students for understanding, not for memorization.  Many times, I bring materials to develop a kinesthetic and visual understanding of a topic, versus "talk and chalk".  i.e., when teaching Geometry, I use Patty Paper.  when introducing sign numbers/integers - I use red and yellow discs.

All levels -- mostly AP Calc students and students that are having difficulty understanding Algebra.    I look for tudents that really want to get better - not because Mom/dad are making them go to a tutor.   I know, nearly 100% of the time, that I make my students look at mathematics differently.

decide what kind of learner you are and then look for the match--   I teach mostly to the visual and kinesthetic learners - not to the memorizers.

I'm fond of my daily workout.  I'm a long distance swimmer (1.25 miles per day - 5/6 days a week), so I do not tutor from 4-5:00 !   BTW, I love to laugh -

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Are you willing to "throw away the book" and learn Mathematics for the love of learning not because you need to learn "rules" and "memorize facts".    Are you willing, after I teach you, to explain it back to me as though I don't understand it and then redo this with friends?  In this way, you get to process what you learned.
