About Jeremy

I was a high performing member of my high school's math team, placing top 5 in numerous Florida Mu Alpha Theta competitions.

I have qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME) 4 times and the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) 1 time (a competition for which only 500 people in the U.S. qualify for).

I have helped my three younger siblings and my friends with their math for years. Now I'm here to help you.

The main thing I enjoy is the challenge of math. Even if you know everything necessary to solve a problem, it still may require thought as to how you are supposed to apply your knowledge. As you practice more and more, you learn tricks and shortcuts that help you solve simple problems more quickly, and that you can apply to help you solve more complex problems without getting stuck on the simple stuff.

My first experiences teaching involved helping my younger siblings and friends. I have also tutored students on other platforms on the Internet. Most of them have been quite satisfied.

Math problems often involve multiple different parts. Many times, it's just a few of these parts that's tripping students up. My first objective is to figure out the strengths and weaknesses of the students with respect to the task at hand. Once I do that, I will place the most emphasis on strengthening weak areas when we are going over problems.

I am used to working with advanced students. However, this does NOT mean I will expect you to understand everything the first time that I explain it. The process of learning mathematics involves making connections across many different concepts. It is almost inevitable that you will need something explained multiple times to fully understand it.

That said, I expect the students with whom I work to make an honest effort to understand the material and not just copy down answers. If you do this, you are an "advanced" student in my mind.

When you're learning a new concept, it will be foreign to you, and you will inevitably have to do a lot of memorization. However, as you become more familiar with the topic, a good teacher will make sure you understand the reasoning behind the topic's concepts, which will reduce the need for memorization.

The process of gaining understanding of a topic (rather than just memorizing) might not come quickly. A good teacher should be patient with you and teach at your pace.

A good teacher should reward you for the right work, even if it produces the wrong answer. The process of how to get the answer is more important than the answer itself

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should give a math problem an honest attempt before asking a teacher for help. There have been many occasions that I have started to explain a problem, and the student was able to finish it without my help. In most of those situations, I believe the student could have solved the problem without the help if they had really tried.

On the flip side, do NOT be afraid to ask for help. As a tutor, I am here to help you.
