About Tristen

Looking for a math tutor? Need some homework help or a little extra support in a difficult math class? I'm here to help!

My name is Tristen (she/her), and I'm passionate about educational equity and helping students reach their full potential. I know what it's like to struggle with school and want to help you be as successful as possible!

I am a UCLA alum with a B.S. degree in Mathematics for Teaching, and I have had 7 years of experience in tutoring math at multiple grade levels.

I started volunteer tutoring in high school by helping elementary students with math homework. Ever since, I've been passionate about education and have loved tutoring and getting to know students of all ages. I love building relationships with students and getting to know what interests them, what goals they have, and how I can help them achieve those goals. I'm extremely patient and excited to help with whatever you need!

I know we all learn in different ways, so I'd love to know how you best learn and what specific type of support you'd like from me as your tutor. For example, some students want to focus on their homework and want their tutor to support them along the way by answering questions when stuck, or pointing them in the right directions. Other students benefit from more close guidance with a tutor-first-demonstration, and a breakdown of the reasoning behind the math processes. Many students want to do practice problems to strengthen their skills on specific topics. As a tutor I can provide practice problems to target areas that need strengthening. Or, if a student is not sure where to start, we can determine what we need to work on along the way!

Math is notorious among students for being difficult, overwhelming, and frankly, soul-crushing. I'm hoping to make it less soul-crushing! I have a lot of experience in struggling with math, and it is my goal to take my hard-fought experience and knowledge and make it work for my students.

I began by volunteer tutoring in high school and contined this during college. I found I really enjoyed this type of work, and decided to change my degree to Mathematics for Teaching.

I've had 7 years of experience in tutoring, and have worked with students of all grade levels. I have also earned a B.S in Mathematics for Teaching from UCLA. My plan is to become a California-credentialed teacher and teach math in high school!

About the lesson

For new students, I take about 10-15 minutes to discuss what their learning goals are, whether they want to do anything specific during a tutoring session, how I can best support them as a tutor, and any questions or concerns they have about tutoring.

Before tutoring, I find it helpful if students provide me with as much information as possible about their class, or the specific things they need help with: a syllabus, past/current homeworks, exam study guides, a list of topics, etc. I can always find more resources, but I work best when I have as much information as possible about the course.

Typically, most of my students need help with homework and studying for exams. A typical session may consist of going through problems the student needs help with, or reviewing problems they have already done and need to check. For test review, I ask the student to send me any problems they want to go over or any topics they want to review further.

I've worked with students of multiple grade levels and different math courses. During college, I volunteered tutored primarily middle and high school students in under-privileged communities in Los Angeles.

I would say, look for a tutor that you feel comfortable with, and don't be afraid to ask the tutor as many questions as you want! And don't be afraid to repeat questions, ask why/how something works, or ask the tutor to try to explain something in a different way. Math problems often have several ways to accomplish them, and some might make more sense to you, or may be more efficient.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about what they want to get out of tutoring. For example, "I want to increase my grade from a C to an A" or "I want to improve my exam averages from D/Fs to Bs". Students should also think about if they want tutoring to be a regular weekly occurence, or if they just want someone they can intermittently get help from.

Details

My current rate is $30/hr, and a session's duration must be at least 30 minutes, ie: for a 20 minute session, I would still charge $15 dollars.

All sessions longer than 30 minutes are calculated as: lesson duration in hours * $30/hr.
