About Evan

As a student myself, I endure the hardships of school. The long nights and painful tests. My service not only provides assistance with the subject at hand, but with study strategies and care for the students success.

This is actually my first year as a tutor. I am excited for the road ahead as I mature into a full time teacher one day. Personally, I feel excited when knowing that I helped a student scucceed. Thats what tutoring and teaching is about.

I started as a volunteer educator at 14 years old teaching Religion. At such a young age, it was a struggle to effectively convey the material to students week in and week out. During this time, I was the recipient of mathematic and standardized test tutoring from a very knowledgeable tutor. As the years progressed and I matured into a more effective teacher and learned skills that I will carry with me into my first year of tutoring and beyond.

I started my career as an educator at age 14, teaching Religion within my local Parish. Since then I have graduated High School with at 3.4 GPA and am currently a student in the MAT Program at Quinnipiac University. Along the way I have found joy in assistting my fellow classmates and friends in Mathematics courses.

About the lesson

While I am new to tutoring as a part-time profession, when working with new students in the past, it is critical to grasp an understanding of their skillset within the specific subject and to evaluate the different ways they absorb information. Every student posesses a unique way of learning, which is why it is important for me as a tutor to figure out each way a new student learns, and develop an efficient plan to teach the material.

I have mostly worked with middle school aged students ranging anywhere from 5th to 8th grade. When I graduate college and earn a MAsters, middle school students are who I plan to teach as well.

A key piece of advice is to help them understand that I am also a student. I go to school everyday just like them, do homework every night, struggle with subjects, and struggle with assignements. I am not an individual graduated from college with a lost grip on what school feels like. As a college student, it is important for me to feel comftorable asking for help and struggling with subjects, that is normal. For a younger student going through the same issues, I feel I can not only assist them with the subject itself, but with other components of school they may struggle with.

A recent event that I am fond of actually occurred as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic. The requirements for becomming a substitute teacher in Connecticut are you now must be 18 years old. With many schools in a hybrid teaching model and many teachers staying home, future teachers like me are now able to get a sense of what being the leader of a classroom feels like. Being able to gain confidence within a classroom at just 18, is a huge step for future teachers.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Going to a teacher for assistance should be something every student feels comftorable with. The one question I thoroughly think through before getting help is: Did I try hard enough, or is there room to improve my effort. Far too often do students ask for help, even though they have not even attempted the task at hand. It is important that you keep trying and trying, then when it comes time for the teachers assistance, you know exactly where, and how you went wrong.
