About Michael
I have worked with students from all different backgrounds, age groups, and ability levels in various settings - from outdoor science classes and adventure sports to classroom teaching and test prep tutoring. All of these experiences have allowed me to hone the skills necessary to adapt material to different learning styles. There is never one approach that will work for everyone, and I am committed to getting to know each of my students - their strengths, weaknesses, interests and passions - in order to effectively help them reach their goals.
I began my teaching career in Outdoor Education. I spent 4 years working in various locations teaching outdoor science classes, leadership seminars, and adventure sports.
I fell in love with teaching/instructing because it allowed me to connect with people from various backgrounds and share my passion for learning and the natural world, and this led me to take on a full-time roll as the Director of an Outdoor Education program on Cape Cod. I gained valuable experience developing curriculum, managing logistics and communications, and hiring/training seasonal educators - all of which prepared me for a successful transition into classroom teaching.
Three years classroom teaching experience: 2 years teaching High School Special Ed, with a focus on math and science. 1 year teaching High School Spanish - levels I and II.
Two years professional tutoring experience - both for the Summit Educational Group and as an independent tutor.

It is essential to get to know the student in both an academic and personal context. Some students are aware of their strenghts, weaknesses, and learning styles, but often times the most effective way to adapt material is to find ways to connect it to a student's interests outside of the classroom.
I spent three years teaching at the high school level, and have tutored students as young as 10 years of age.
In my outdoor education career, I regularly worked with students from Grade 4 up through the high school and university levels.
Always have a conversation first to see if there is a good connection. There are a lot of intelligent people available to help, but not everyone will be the right fit based on individual communication or learning styles.
One of the students I recently worked with was struggling with Spanish. We were able to take the material and turn it into games to make the learning more interactive and he really started to make positive strides. He is now excelling in the subject and told me that he wants to keep learning the langauge and maybe even try to become fluent someday.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Try to think about what steps you have taken to try to be successful on your own. What things have you tried that helped / What things haven't worked or made problems more difficult?
It's not always easy to analyze our own learning, but try to come up with at least a couple of examples and be as specific as possible with the challenges you are facing. Make an effort to avoid sentences like "I just don't get it" or "It's too hard".
All learning is just an accumulation of different skills, and you may be surprised by how many of those skills you already possess. Most of the time, getting over your hurdles is just a matter of understanding when to use skills that you already know, or filling in a few small gaps.
