About Kevin

‘I can’t do math’. For my entire 22 years of teaching math, I’ve heard that phrase (or other forms of it) hundreds of times. My response is always the same: You CAN do math. What you can’t do is learn it the way you think everyone else is learning it. The greatest struggle most math students have is thinking they’re bad at something because someone else appears to be better at it.

The truth is that every student approaches and learns math in ways that are unique to them. Every brain is different. A set curriculum or method isn’t always going to make sense.

Unfortunately, schools face a challenge of finding curricula that maximizes the learning for the most amount of students - which is really the only way they can do it - but unfortunately, that doesn’t help ALL students. If the curriculum doesn’t make sense to the student, they will think they don’t understand the math when it’s more likely they don’t understand the way it’s being taught.

That’s why I teach using inquiry-based methods. I will ask the student many questions designed to figure out what works best for their learning brain, and then ask more questions to get the brain engaged and thinking. If the student really learns best by memorizing algorithms (most people don’t), then that’s what we’ll do. If they like to work backwards or sideways, we’ll do that. Are they visual, kinesthetic, or auditory? Logical or abstract? Whatever their strengths, we’ll discover them and use them to deepen their mathematical thinking.

About the lesson

Lots of questions! I like to get to know how the student thinks so we don't waste time trying approaches that don't fit the student's learning styles and problem solving.

I taught mostly middle and high school. I can work with all ages though.
