About Alisha

My services stand out because I know how to make the learning experience fun. My service also stands out because I work the math problems with students by not only asking questions that relate to the next step but also show them how it's done using a white board. I also create Kahoot games to quiz them. I play the kahoot games with them where my students always wanted to beat my time in answering. Kahoot and the white board experiences signigicantly improved the confidence of my students as well as their grades. To me, math is like the science behind why things exist the way they do. As Neil Armstrong once said, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for man kind" as he took his first steps on the moon. Math works in a similar fashion, baby steps for the biggest steps possible.

I have a Bachelors of Science in Business Management from the University of Phoenix and have well over 10 years experience in helping students with Math. My college math experience consisted of Algebra I and II, Math as a Practical Art, and Statistics. My tutoring experience is with Middle School and High School students from Pre-algebra (the foundations of Algebra), Algebra I and Geometry, (the core classes for High school graduation). My further experiences is tutoring students in the foundations of Chemistry and Physics. My public school experieces consisted of volunteering, working as an AVID Excel Tutor, and then an ELL Paraeducator for the Tukwila School District of Washington state.

My favorite part is seeing a child smile when the light bulb in their thinking goes off and they finally figure out the answer to their own mystery. I enjoy relating life's creations to their level of understanding, from Minecraft to how the major pyramids in Egypt were built. A picture can only say so much whereas the story and steps behind it make it an adventure.

My volunteer experience as a instructional aide, work experience as a Paraeducator and an AVID Tutor with students from grades K-12 from the Tukwila School District of Washington dates back to 2007. I also have met the Paraeducator requirements of Washington state and am working on getting my certifications in Arizona. Teaching is my passion.

I graduated in 2009 with a Bachelors of Science in Business Management from the University of Phoenix where I was exposed to Algebra I & II, Geometry, Math as a Practical Art, and Statistics. I was a volunteer instructional aide for elementary K-5 students from 2007 - 2013. I was English Language Learner (ELL) Paraeducator for six years for grades 9-12 in 2013 - 2020. I have helped teach AVID strategies for college readiness. I have training that consist with child behavior and how to approach various situations with an "I can" attitude. I also have experience as a PSAT and SAT proctor.

My typical processes when working with a new student is asking them what troubles they are having so I can get a clearer picture of how to approach the problem(s). I work problems with them to keep them engaged. Kahoot games make math fun as far as remembering the vocabulary of math or how math is solved. I use zoom meet which has the needed white board and the ability to share screens. I like to work and create math problems with students in order to see and show them how to solve and double check their work. Seeing the work done builds more confidence in the processes needed to find the mysterious answer.

I have worked with students who are classified as ELL (Englsh Language Learners) or ESL (English as a Second Language). I have fond experiences with working with students who have various forms of disabilities. For my former Emerging ELL students who could not speak English or very little, pictures and word phrases helped significantly.

The advice I have would be in forms of questions. The notion of not giving up, as we all learn from trial and error, is the needed yeast to make the bread rise. But the question I think of is in relation to their needs, motivations, and inspirations. One question I can think of is: What do you hope to achieve, learning and memorization or the fun of learning in order to apply your understanding? Learning is an art ready to create a masterpiece of understanding.

A recent event I am fond of is when my former ELL students contact me for further help in math. I love the compliments I get for the patience and love I have given to them as they battled with the learning of one of the most difficult languages to learn, English. Feeling accepted no matter their religion, the color of their skin, disability, sexual orientation, or where they are from has always been important for me for no matter what. Feelling loved and accepted is the bridge to a better life. My students taught me more of the world around me for which I will be forever grateful for.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I always think of the five W's: who, what, when, where, and why. Who is it benefiting? What makes the learning not so boring? When I feel I don't understand it, is there another way to help me? Why does this learning matter or why do I need to understand it? Where do I find more information to help me see it? Questions are always important and not one question is too silly to ask. Everything starts with a question before the answer is found.

My standard pricing is $25 per one hour of tutoring per day. a session. However, I can adjust my pricing based on a students grade level and type of math. I like to do a free 30 minute zoom meet and greet with the parent and their child. From there, I create an ivoice through PayPal for record keeping, which can be charged on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis, which ever is best for the parents pocket. Once payment has been recieved, I create zoom meetings and use google calendar to send the zoom invites.
