About Monika

Hi! My name is Monika, and I've been teaching/tutoring math for the past 16 years.

When I was only 13 years old, I decided I wanted to be a math teacher when I grew up. So that's what I did - I went to college and got my Bachelor of Science in Math Education.

Over the years, I've varied what I've done, working jobs around my family, since while my kids were young, I wanted to be able to stay home with them, and I also homeschooled for many years.

So I've taught public high school, private high school and middle school, I've taught college remedial algebra classes part-time since 2007, I've tutored privately in my home and students' homes, and I tutored for a short time for a tutoring company.

I currently teach math at a Christian school; every day I teach Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Finite Math, Precalculus, and Calculus. Whew! Of course, with the pandemic that's going on right now, I'm teaching all of those from home.

I love to help people, and I'm passionate about math; those are the two things that made me want to be a math teacher all those years ago. I'm very knowledgeable in my content area; I graduated valedictotorian, with a 4.0 GPA, from college. But I know how to take hard concepts and break them down to make them manageable for anybody.

My students would tell you that I'm very patient, caring, and always willing to help. I hope you'll trust me to help you!

The best thing is seeing students go from not understanding something to understanding. Sometimes it's a "lightbulb" moment; other times it's a gradual understanding that comes from lots of failures and successes.

Along with that, I love to see students grow mentally and become independent learners, where they need me less and less and are able to problem-solve and figure things out on their own.

I've wanted to be a math teacher since I was 13 years old, because I've always loved math, and I love to help people. That's what I went to college for and what I started doing straight out of college.

16 years total of tutoring or teaching math to students from Grades 7-12 and to adults in college.

About the lesson

1) Get to know them a little. Ask them what areas/topics THEY want to work on.

2) Have them do a few math problems in one of those areas so I can evaluate and see specifically what they know and where they're struggling.

3) Identify to them what they're doing right (yay!) and what they're doing wrong and why. Teach them correct steps and thought processes and the "why" behind it, or if they basically have the concept down, just tweak where necessary.

4) Have them practice multiple problems in front of me, so I can guide and correct when needed, prompting them to find their own errors and correct them appropriately.

5) Keep having the student practice, perhaps gradually increasing difficulty, until he/she is confidently solving problems correctly on their own.

6) Go back to step 1 and repeat with a new topic.

A wide variety, since I've taught hundreds of math students over the years. I've worked with students who REALLY struggle with math, I've worked with students for whom math comes easily, and I've taught all levels in between. A lot of the adults I've taught in college have had a hard time with math, either because they were older and had been out of school for many years, or because math just wasn't their thing (in order to be in my classes, they had to fail a placement test). Many, but not all, of my Pre-Calculus and Calculus students have been naturally good at math. I've taught middle schoolers, who are just being introduced to the concepts of algebra, and 9th graders who are just being introduced to the theorems and proofs in Geometry.

Have a tutoring session with them and evaluate them for yourself. Do they know their content? Are they able to explain things in a way that you understand? Do they seem to be genuine and to care about you? There's nothing wrong with "shopping around" until you find a good fit for you.

Since we've been at home during the coronavirus pandemic, my students have really had to challenge themselves to learn their math at home without me. They've been using instructional videos I make, and they do all their assignments on GoFormative, so that they know whether they're getting their answers correct or not. When they have trouble, they contact me. If it's an easy fix, I can just respond to them through a message or email and help them that way. However, when it's a larger, conceptual issue, I've been setting up virtual tutoring sessions with them. After tutoring one of my Calculus students one weekend, I was completely surprised and so honored and touched to see this post she put on her facebook page:

"I was having a lot of trouble understanding my calculus assignments that were given to us this past week. Monika McMahan Daugherty helped me tremendously with countless emails. Not only that, but we had an almost hour phone call and we used Ziteboard (a virtual white board we can both write on) where we worked through the problems together. Although my senior year may be cut short due to the Coronavirus, I’m glad to know that I have teachers who go out of their way to make this last stretch as easy as possible. Thank you Mrs. Daugherty, or as calculus class calls her... Daughty"

It really warmed my heart.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do I know my weaknesses are in this subject? What topics are especially hard for me? What do I want to get out of tutoring? Am I prepared to put the necessary work in?

The more specific you can be when explaining what you need help with, the better. Your tutor will most likely find other things along along the way that you need to address together, but it's great if you can give them a starting point.
