About Julia

I have always had a passion for math and I followed that path all the way through college, earning a BS in mathematics. I spent many years as well working with teenagers in various forms of education, in the classroom, during after school programs, and also leading wilderness adventure programs in the summers. I spend over 200 hours working in school settings and student teaching as part of my education studies, earning a certification in teachers eduction from Bates College. Since graduating, I have continued to appreciate the art of education throughout the jobs I've held. I always engage in educational opportunities through a creative lens, personalizing strategies in order to match various learning styles of students.

I gratuated from Bates College with a BS in Mathematics Education. In addition to the education classes I took, I also spent over 200 hours throughout the program working in local classrooms to gain experience. Over the last decade I have taught a number of additional subjects and activities, mostly outdoor skills such as wilderness first aid, skiing lessons with adaptive athletes, and backpacking, rock climbing, canoeing and white water rafting education for teenagers.

About the lesson

I use a site called whiteboard.fi which is designed for virtual classroom teaching and it allows for convenient online math collaboration. When working with a new student, I cater my approach based on the students relationship with math and their particular needs for support. I am able to prepare resources and lessons before a tutor session to dive deeper into misunderstood concepts and I am also available to assist with assignment already provide by a student's classroom teacher. My goal is to help students appreciate and enjoy components of a subject that can often be overlooked.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It is helpful for students to consider which subjects are causing the most confusion. When working through assignments, keep a running list of questions but also take note of the general concepts that are not making sense. Understanding your personal learning style can help you communicate your needs with a tutor as well. If you don't know your prefered learning style, tutoring could be a great opportunity to explore strategies to help you maximize your learning potential.
