About Amanda

I tailor each tutoring session to fit the needs of the student so that I can clearly communicate in ways that they understand how to understand each topic in math. When I was growing up, math was my favorite subject to learn partially because I had amazing teachers who made math approachable and engaging. They always tried different angles and approaches if their students had trouble understanding. I know what it feels like to be lost in a class or to be surrounded by students who to seem to always understand the topic. My goal is to make sure that no student ever feels overwhelmed learning math and to always support them in their learning through encouragement and compassion. Having attended an all arts high school, I saw first hand the differences in how students learn, from visual to tactile learners, and recognized the importance of teachers being flexible in their lesson plans to ensure that students of all kind can learn the way they learn best. I strive to be like those teachers and never leave any student behind.

I enjoy helping my students relieve their stress or anxiety about learning. I have such joy and happiness when students realize they are more capable of doing things than they thought they were and become excited to tackle new challenges.

About the lesson

My typical process of working with a student is to first get to know them. This includes areas that they need assistance in and how learning at school is going, but it also includes getting to know what activities they like to do, how they spend their free time, and their personality. This is important to me because students all learn differently and sometimes it is harder to recognize the ways they learn when you only know them from an academic standpoint. Talking about their activities and favorite things to do helps me as a teacher to see how their minds thinks and what comes easily to them. After getting to know them, I like to ask them why they would like a tutor and what areas they believe they would like help in. This is important to me because I want to student to feel included in the tutoring process and explain in their own words why they are here.

I have worked with students of many ages ranging from grades 1st-12th and in areas of math from beginning addition to AP Calculus BC. The students I've worked with each had a different learning style. Some were visual learners, as they were musical theatre enthusiasts or illustrators, some learned best through problem solving sets, as they enjoyed mental exercise from being dancers and choreographers, and some found that tactile learning was best for them because they like to use their hands and feel the differences in objects. I've loved working with all types of student because I am not only able to help them in ways they didn't receive help before, but it also teaches me something about the way students learn and the uniqueness everyone has.

I would advise the student to get to know the tutors interested in you and see if you click well with them, in both what you are looking for in a tutor as well as personality and character wise. I think that this is very important to do because this person that you are hiring is someone that you will be spending some time with and if the connection isn't there, it is hard to open up about areas you would like help in, or being honest about your learning preferences, and lastly the tutoring session won't be something you look forward to each time and can begin to feel like a chore or task. It is very hard to learn when you aren't looking forward to learning and can become discouraging if you aren't having a good time. Make sure that the person you hire is someone who makes you feel motivated and encouraged to learn and work with.
