About Maireny

I am a public school Special Education Teacher working in the Soundview section of the Bronx. I'm in my third year of teaching and I love what I do. Math has a special place in my heart and it genuinely makes me feel excited. I know Math, particularly Algebra I, is an area of difficulty for most; It is one of the top contributors of low high school graduation rates. Last fall, I facilitated a peer tutoring program at my school and all of the students who participated improved their scores on the NYS Common Core Algebra I Regents Exam. It brings me great joy to see my students succeed by way of making progress. My approach to math is to break it down into basic steps. 'I put the cookies on a shelf where my students can reach them.' I'm confident that with a few sessions your performance in math will improve.

I currently co-teach three sections of Algebra I, one section of Geometry, and one section of Algebra II. I have always loved Math. I am blessed to be able to teach it everyday. However, I understand this isn't always the case for everyone. I have seen so many of my students struggle to understand content and while their efforts paid off at times, then still needed additional support. In reaction, I facilitated an Algebra I Peer Tutoring program at my school to help students with marginal Algebra I Regents scores improve their mathematical application and retention. Almost two thirds of the students who participated exhibited an increase in motivation and engagement in the classroom. Most of them were able to make improvements in their class scores as well.

I currently co-teach three sections of Algebra I at my school, which are all centered around Algebraic topics covered on the NYS Regents for the past four years. Our team works hard to prepare our students for the Algebra I Regents. Our students did very well last year. Those who did the best were students who accessed outside resources (attend Saturday Regents Prep sessions with our teachers, complete practice sheets given by our teachers, watching excellent math Youtubers, etc.). I can show you how to access materials which will help practice for the Algebra regents and how to make the most of those resources so you can pass the exam.

About the lesson

Our school has a rising population of autistic students. I have been formally trained by the New York University ASD Nest program to support autistic students academically and socially. I also go attend professional development 4-6 times per school year. These sessions are centered around autistic students and the development of students on the spectrum. As well, we discuss strategies to support autistic students in classroom settings.

Have a goal in mind; No matter what it is. You can't get where you're going if you don't know where you're going.
