About Sheila

I, Sheila Jones, am a former Drexel University student. My major was Psychology and my minor was Education. I had the pleasure of getting certified to teach within the School District of Philadelphia. I specialize in STEM, Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathmatics, related subjects. I have student-teached from 2017-2020.

Unfortunately due to the current pandemic, COVID-19, schools were shut down and my student teach was discontinued. However, I had the pleasure of tutoring and teaching two amazing students in the first grade during the pandemic when they were virtual. Both of which have exceeded there schools average and overcame learning barriers they were documented to have had. Both students not open passed the first grade however, they were two of the most top performing students in their class.

Prior to my teaching experiences at Drexel and during this past pandemic, I have been tutoring since the age of 9. It started off with me just helping my neighbors' daughter in math and reading. Then, my school designated me as a student tutor and I would tutoring classmates during break out sessions and during Saturday school.

Aside from teaching certifications, I am a certified Mental Health First Aid, and I am fully covered and have all clearances in regards to child safety and care.

When working with a new student, we'd  like to formally introduce myself. We'd like to spend some time getting to know the student. We would often initiate a ice breaker. In doing this, both the student and instructor can gain some perspective on what type of learners and doers we are.

We would set up a video chat (via zoom, FaceTime, or Google Duo) to complete our introduction. We would set time aside to present my ideal objectives and goals for that specific student. We would allow time for the student to make a list of goal setting for one's self.

We would go over a syllabus and schedule for that student. We would provide resources such as educational materials, supplies, and practice work. Also, We would provide resources such as google classroom.

On day 1, it will be designated as a introduction and overview of Helping Minds tutoring. Also, on day 1, We would administer a brief assessment in the specific subject(s) that would be expected to be completed before the next tutoring session. And, together we will review the assessment and create a plan of action for moving forward, based on results.

Each student will receive a progress report in which MUST be reviewed & signed each week by a parent or guardian.
