About Nathaniel

Customizing instruction to every student and their specific improvement goals. Focusing on their learning context from grade school to undergraduate in college.

Making a difference by spreading knowledge in complicated and often nuanced subjects. Turning frustration to excitment in complicated topics is an experience I strive for with all students.

Originally my interest in teaching started with my experience watching younger children in the neighborhood. Which originally was intended to nuture and keep the young ones safe while the partents were busy with other activities. This however evolved as watching young ones often turns into an opportunity to instruct and teach as well. Over time this became part of the job instructing young children about basic language, counting, and other elementry concepts.

My first expereince tutoring was on a volunary basis with students taking Computer Science 101 class in college. I enjoyed being able to refresh my own knowledge and help students navigate this difficult subject matter. Through the experience I found that I learned almost as much as the students and from there I wanted to continue the experience.

As a grad school student I have continued to have experiences training and teaching one-on-one with other students, and this interest in helping and learning with students has only continued.

I am currently working as a consulting engineer for electrical engineering for building and infastructure projects. I have worked in the past as an automotive engineer. I have worked on several personal projects. I have graduated as a Bachalore's of Electrcial Engineering student, and am working towards a Master's in Power Engineering currently.

About the lesson

I like to meet with the student and kind of get a general feel with what their current level of understanding is and what their goals for improvement are. Is it general understanding? Testing preperation? I like to approach topics and students on an individual bassis to the greatest extent possible. I am your tutor to be a personal tutor, and I see the working relationship as best spent zeroing in on each students specific needs.

Younger school aged students.

High school students in algebra and some pre-calculus concepts.

Fellow engineering students for computer science and programming classes 101 and 201 levels.

More advanced fellow students in graduate school. (As I still am in graduate school a lot of these particularly collaborative learning experiences.)

Look for someone that has experience as specific to your needs as possible. Learning is a very indivudal process, and even with an instructor a lot of the process is about what you need to learn something. A tutors job is to kind of deliever information and hopefully in a way that works for you as a student to understand, but ultimately its the student that has to learn the concept.

Communication style may also be as important if not more than competance in the material. Knowing something and knowing how to communicate with the student can be two different things. I have noticed that a lot of my sucess as a student with some subject matter experts in my field of study really has depended on my ability to connect with the instrtuctor's communication style.

I am really proud of a lot of the group work I have done in graudate class studies. There have been many opportunities to work late with very passionate students about learning to finilize our projects and make many personal academenic breakthroughs that help further our academic careers and learn more about the world.

Recently another student and I were able to complete a model of a power system on our own in matlab code. Though this is not a new thing to be done by any means learning a concept in great depth and then applying it in practice all the way was a very rewarding and empowering process.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Know your learning style, what have instructors in the past done that helps you the most? Spending more time on concepts or more time on examples? Do you like to try examples without instructor, just after, with instructors and then similar examples on own study time? How well do you study on your own time?

Know how you communicate best. Do you communicate better with a face to face style discussion, or better from a board? Does text or spoken word help the most? Are visual examples important to solidfy understanding?

Know your weaknesses. What has tripped you up in the past and what has helped overcome those areas of difficulty?

$25 per session (60-90 minutes each) for grade school basic levels.

$35 per session (60 minutes each) High school (not including calculus).

$45 per session (60 minutes each) Calculus and beyond. (This may require more background work and preperation, price reflects that.)
